THE SYMPTOMS MEANING CAUSES OF IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA:
Iron deficiency anaemia is caused by lack of iron, often because of blood loss or pregnancy. It's treated with iron tablets prescribed by a GP and by eating iron-rich foods.

Check if you have iron deficiency anaemia,
Symptoms can include:
• Tiredness and lack of energy
• Shortness of breath
• Noticeable heartbeats (heart palpitations)
• Pale skin

Less common symptoms of iron deficiency anaemia (that are not usually connected to pregnancy) include:
• Headaches
• Hearing ringing, buzzing or hissing noises inside your head (tinnitus)
• Food tasting strange
• Feeling itchy
• A sore tongue
• Hair loss – you notice more hair coming out when brushing or washing it
• Wanting to eat non-food items, such as paper or ice (pica)
• Finding it hard to swallow (dysphagia)
• Painful open sores (ulcers) in the corners of your mouth
• Spoon-shaped nails
• Restless legs syndrome

You must see your healthcare professional if you have symptoms of iron deficiency anaemia - A simple blood test will confirm if you're anaemic.

TREATMENT OF IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA:
Things you can do yourself:
If your diet is partly causing your iron deficiency anaemia, your healthcare professional will tell you what foods are rich in iron so you can eat more of them.

Eat and drink more:
• Dark-green leafy vegetables like watercress and curly kale
• Cereals and bread with extra iron in them (fortified)
• Meat
• Dried fruit like apricots, prunes and raisins
• Pulses (beans, peas and lentils)

Eat and drink less (Large amounts of these foods and drinks make it harder for your body to absorb iron):
• Tea
• Coffee
• Milk and dairy
• Foods with high levels of phytic acid, such as wholegrain cereals, which can stop your body absorbing iron from other foods and pills

You might be referred to a specialist dietitian if you're finding it hard to include iron in your diet.

I was diagnosed at 9 with iron deficiency, they took me off of iron pills once I was good. Now I'm 31 and my anemia gives me pain and tiredness, muscle spasms happen over my chest cavity. I've gone to the emergency several times and my heart is fine. The docs at the emergency linked it up to anxiety. After all that I finally find a doc who did the proper tests and told me it's just anemia and it can be fixed so no worries. The relief I felt after fearing my heart was the problem, really it's something I can fix and over come like I did when I was 9. I'm happy to know

I am anemic and have been anemic for a long time until the symptoms worsened lately. Just wanted to add on to the symptoms for awareness, I’ve had serious addiction for eating ice cubes for years until I googled and realised it’s called (PICA), another symptom for lack of iron. After I took the iron tablets for about 2 months, the addiction just went away completely. None of the healthcare professionals were able to pick up on this, just sharing and hope this will be helpful to someone else experiencing the same as me:)

Thank you so much for this!!! I’ve been trying to gather as much information as I can on iron deficiency. It turns out that I have detrimental iron deficiency anemia. I take 2 prescription doses a day, and am struggling to get my iron up. I fast before and after my pills. It’s a tough road.

Do blood transfusions help anemia reversal quicker? My current hemoglobins test said I was at 8.2. I had a transfusion a month and a half ago and was a 7.
