As a non IT person, I wish you elaborated on how you come upon your preferences of one product versus another. Technical explanations are okay!!

Chris, the big challenge with virt-manager, making and using a shared directory. It is more complicated for virt-manager than for Virtualbox (for security-reasons it is not that easy to get that done in virt-manager) and we don't want Linux-users to be stuck to Virtualbox, right? 😉 So it is a good idea for a video if you can figure it out. A shared folder is pretty much essential for a VM in my book.

As a VMWare Admin this is a daily chore when everyone comes dragging in their fantastic machine. Importing, exporting, ova, ovf it all seems someone is doing it for the first time, yes there is a complete write up in Atlassian. Then there are the ones that blame everything on VMWare because their exports are too big (uhhhh clean up your machine first maybe). Never mind I get paid tons of money for this...

VirtualBox is VERY popular and common in IT. I speak from experience. Not for general hosting, but for testing and specialized client-network access.

VirtualBox is actually great for 90% of the applications for workstation / desktop use and it supports many different Vm disk formats too. I used it nearly exclusivelly for more than 10 years without a single issue. Now I use virt-manager for gpu passthrough and vmware workstation too because it has better 3d acceleration (higher opengl version) but that's the only advantage I see for those solutions compared to VirtualBox

you complain about virtual box but then go right into why vmdk is bad because its not portable. i use proxmox and virtual box and if you have enough memory and cpu the best option is virtual box because anyone can use it, share it, transfer it. not everyone has a lab in their house like you.

Ventoy lets you live boot Windows from VHDx files on a drive with a plugin, and also other formats for Linux. That's something you should look into, it's really interesting :D

3:25 while I can't see myself ever having a vhd that's 2Tb or larger, I guess that it can still open my eyes to why large companies may not use vhds. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Thanks for this video, was kinda waiting for it, I remember beeing too lazy to install windows and just burning my virtual machine (img for qemu) to a physical harddrive
Kinda worked (kinda), always wanted to know them in a little more detail.

VMware Workstation Pro is now free for personal use. Gonna give it a shot.

Thanks Chris, looking forward to quickemu. hopefully will cover how to run it from a different directory than it's .conf file. and how to make use of bridged network.

Hey Chris. New Sub here. I love how passionate you are about bringing the control of the windows experience back to the end user. I wish I had the patience and know-how to do it myself as there have been many times Windows, as is, interferes with what I am trying to do. I have an interesting problem currently, and maybe this isn't the best place to ask about it, but I'm gonna ask anyway... Lol! What is it within the Windows Telemetry processes that limit's my internet speed? It took me over a year to figure out it was something in telemetry, and I only figured it out by accident when downloading and using Winero Tweaker to disable the telemetry, which re-enables itself after a few hours and brings the problem back. When I download a game on Steam (or any other download) I max out at 1MB/s prior to disabling telemetry, but after disabling telemetry through Winero Tweaker I top out at the proper 20MB/s. This happens 100% of the time and forces me to use Winero Tweaker and restart before downloading anything large. Is there a way to fix this permanently? Thanks and keep up the great work!

MacOS has VMWare Fusion instead of VMWare WorkStation. It is a slightly different process to export ovf files, but it can be done.

A few months ago, I used VMware vCenter Converter Standalone to create a VM of my Window 11 laptop. It created the files in VMDK format. Since then, I updated the VMware vCenter to Ver 6.4 and when I created a VM of my Windows 10 desktop, it created the files in VHDX. Any idea why ? The problem that it created for me is that I want to deploy this on my QNAP NAS and it won't recognize the VHDX files.

@ChrisTitusTech if I am using win10pro on my PC, and I use a win7pro on a VM, is my host (win10) PC potentially vulnerable from my VM (win7) when using a bridged network connection???

Great video as always! Random question because why not:

How would you suggest one to start with IT, looking to make a career in it without going bankrupt for college? Would you even suggest such a route?
