How to Convert a Physical Computer to a VMware Workstation Virtual Machine

If you have a physical computer such as your desktop PC and want to convert it to a virtual machine to be used in VMware Workstation, this is possible and fairly easy to do. In the past you could use the VMware vCenter Converter Standalone software but that is not being updated by VMware anymore for some reason so thankfully there is an alternative.

In order to convert your PC to a VM (physical to virtual), you will need to export or copy its physical disk to a VMDK file, and this can be done using the StarWind V2V Converter software. This video shows you how to perform this process from start to finish.

Here is a link to the software.

Check out our book (VMware Workstation Made Easy) that is designed to take your virtualization skills to the next level!

Can one do a P2V of a dual boot machine and then convert only one boot side? I.E., I have a win7 and win xp computer dual boot; I'd like to just convert the win 7 side.

at 4:48 I do not get this option to choose an existing backup. Is this a PRO version feature or can I do it in the free version?

Does this program has a bootable version to convert the system without the OS loaded?

Have you been able to use the Mac OS Vm with or without your Apple ID??? I’ve read that Apple has been banning Apple accounts attached to hackintosh or Mac OS vms.

I tried to use this according to your video, didn't work.
I tried creating it in different ways and none worked.
Couldn't find vmdk file, or it tried to boot via a non existant drive.
They need a better way of doing this.. so far it's just hogwash.

I did it and it works, but its very slow with 6 giga ram. I am not sure if I have installed properly the vm tools. do i need to restart the program once i do?

Edit: Actually, I increased ram usage and added properly the tools and now works a lot better. Now, I stored all these in an old hard drive, if I want them in a portable SSD for better performance, do i need to redo the process or can I just copy paste the contents of the old hard drive directly to the SSD?
