Griffith (Berserk) Ultimate Voice Comparison

Griffith was the founder and leader of the Band of the Hawk. A band of mercenaries who all would gladly give their lives for Griffiths dream. Griffith's dream is to one day acquire his own kingdom and is willing to give up anything to achieve it. He won Guts into the Band of the Hawk through combat and therefore eventually developing a friendship between the two. It's heavily debated why Griffith had Guts join the Band of the Hawk and why Griffith always gave Guts special treatment, but their friendship lead to probably the greatest betrayal in anime and manga history.

In the Japanese Dub Griffith was originally voiced by Toshiyuki Morikawa who voiced Griffith in the original Berserk (1997) anime and he then reprised the role 7 years later for the Berserk Millennium Falcon Game. 8 years later Morikawa was replaced by actor Takahiro Sakurai for the Berserk Golden Age Arc trilogy and has been the voice ever since.

For the English Dub Griffith was originally voiced by Kevin T Collins in the original Berserk anime which was Dubbed by NYAV Post in 2002. Kevin reprised the role 10 years later for the Golden Age Arc movie trilogy. 4 years later Kevin was replaced by Viz Media actor Steve Staley for the Berserk 2016 sequel

For the video I used clips in both Japanese and English of episodes 2, 10 and 19 of the original Berserk 1997 anime. I also used clips from both the first and second movies of the Berserk Golden Age Arc trilogy. Finally I used clips Berserk 2016 episode 2 in season 1 and episode 1 of season 2.

Steve is alright but there’s something so sincere about Kevin’s portrayal. It’s like with Steve you can just tell Griffith is evil by the tone of his voice where as Kevin did it in a way that made me question what his true intentions really are. Steve almost portrays him like a villain where as Kevin you don’t immediately know what he is.

Kevin T Collins is the best Griffith. Though, I like Morikawa’s as well. Funny that both Cloud Strife and Sephiroth plays Griffith.
Edit: I just learn that Steve Staley is also Kadaj from Advent Children as well. Man, 3 Final Fantasy VII actors playing this guy.

Kevin was the voice I heard reading the manga before I even saw the show

I just realised something. Griffiths dream is he wants to be totally free to do what he wants, and to do that he feels he has to have total power over others, and use them as he wants. The egg of the kings means he is "fated/destined" to do so, but in a way that means he isn't free at all.

Guts, seems to not really know what his dream is, but realises he should have one through his relationship and listening to Griffith. He wants to be free and struggles against fate, when he gets marked for death by the godhand, he is destined for sacrifice... maybe without his sacrifice Griffith can never truly achieve what he wants because it is part of the deal right? But Guts refuses to die, he is forced to fight so he isn't free, but he's gonna struggle until he gets revenge and can go... get really strong? Whatever he dreams of when he isn't being persecuted really.

Anyway its interesting to me that Griffith is a slave to fate, while Guts is forced to struggle, but kind of does it so willfully that he seems to be free of its shackles.
