How Breakdancing Broke the Olympics

Come see me live:

Hi Friends.

This week I wanted to share my thoughts on the Olympics overall. Now that they are over and we can look back there are so many memorable snapshots, performances, and moments we can hold forever.

The U.S. and China were neck and neck for Gold medals leading to a controversy over how we count medals and the practices America has engaged in to always seem like we are on top without mentioning certain data and metrics.

We were in shock and awe of moments that were undoubtedly deeply unfortunate for athletes like runners that fell or dropped batons during track events and pole vaulters who were disqualified or missed the mark in field.

Russia was notably not a presence in the games with many chiming in as to the reasons and if they were fair to the athletes that would have competed this year.

Hosted in Paris this year’s Olympics saw fierce competition between Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Australia, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and the United States.

St Lucia and some other smaller countries received their first medals.

One person that captivated everyone throughout the course of their event was an Australian breakdancer. Rachel Gunn known by some as Raygun put out a performance that was wildly criticized and also called into question how she ever qualified in the first place with a lot of the breakdance community in Australia saying they never even knew a qualifying event was taking place.

Hit me on them internets:

My favourite thing about Josh Johnson is his voice is young, his face is young, and his laugh is at least 70 years old.

Josh, i don't know how many people can appreciate how ballsy it is of you to just release basically entire specials regularly on YouTube for free. Whatever you release is just your topical stuff of news from the day, not even your written and refined bits. This is insane and I applaud you.

"If you're going to represent me in the Olympics, I need you to play better than I can play." Sums up many of us Aussies' feelings about women's breakdancing right now.

As an Australian, the firsthand embarrassment was *extreme*. I know people who lost out on the selection to that woman, and … dear God. That was just… I don’t even have the words. We were MORTIFIED.

As soon as he said "break dancing, " the ENTIRE audience knew where he was going. That woman was uncomfortable to watch - the secondhand embarrassment was awful.

"her body remained on the ground in a way that was not satisfying" exactly!

In Greece we have a viral meme of her, which says, "when you pull the tourist in the Greek dance circle"

I’m an Aussie… I’m speechless. It’s been painful to watch. She’s dressed like an 80s MacDonalds drive thru attendant. But OMG the two free nods judgement?! That should be made an official Olympic judging panel. Daaaang

As a kid all I wanted was breakdancing in the Olympics, now I truly understand the phrase “be careful what you wish for”

Josh is hands down the best comedian of our time. No malice, expert social commentary, original as hell. Love from Australia, please come!

The fact that no one was talking ab the person who won gold but that nonchalant and chill turkish guy Yusuf Dikeç who won silver was everywhere 😭

Give the sound person a raise. The claps are sparkling. Your voice is honey.

Never thought I’d see Elaine from Seinfeld breakdancing in the Olympics.
