The normal distribution makes sense. However, the defamation laws in Japan are some of the most backwards legislation I’ve ever heard of. One can be held liable for defamation even if the statements are true, so long as those statements caused reputational damage. Whereas in the majority of Western countries, you can only be held liable if you make *false* statements that cause reputational damage.

In America it’s not considered slander if it’s true. But in Japan even if it is true it’s still slander.

I can just imagine the jail being like "yo whatchu in for huh?" "I gave a bad review under some restaurant" lol

Hot tip - only ever use an anonymous account to leave bad reviews.

Everyone keep saying “Japan is living in 2035” because of the tech innovations.
But socially, they’re still living in 1535.

I can't forget the story of a guy who was being abused by his family, he exposed everything and the family sued him even though everything he said was true

I find it really funny reading Japanese reviews for local places on Google or for products on Amazon. There will be reviews like: "Great service, delicious food, so happy" - 3 stars. "The product is wonderful and did everything I needed." - 3 stars. 😅 It's the most bizarre thing 😆 what warrants a 5 star, I'm not sure!

Imagine you leave a bad review because you got food poisoning and then you get sued 😭

Aaand this reputation thing is also why the majority of r4pe and SA cases go unreported.

Not so fun fact: The defamation laws that make this a reality is also why so many sexual assaults, abuses and other horrific harassment go unreported. If you tell the truth about your boss groping you and treating you like a slave with evidence, it doesn’t matter if it’s true, they can and will sue you for hurting their reputation.
Women are too afraid to report sexual abuse, young men are too afraid to report awful abusive working conditions, and everyone is afraid to report a whole slew of other TRUE things! It’s absolutely insane… they need to change those backward ass laws and start protecting vulnerable people and not the rich and powerful.
There’s literally a case of a famous Japanese “sexually motivated murderer” (that’s all I’m saying) and his family had him put into a mental hospital instead of prison, and basically silenced any news source or outlet from speaking about him or the family because they’re rich and powerful. Dude committed absolutely horrific crimes and ended up basically in a 5 star hotel with a spa and no one was allowed to say anything about it because they would be sued for defamation even though it’s true!

It’s messed up… I had no clue it extended to food reviews but I’m not surprised.

Reviews used to be like that in the US too. 3/5 was “as expected”, 4/5 was “better than expected”, and 5/5 was “this is ACTUALLY life changing”.

Damn, so that's why literally everything in Tokyo on Google Maps is 3.0 to 3.8 or something. I thought it was so weird seeing reviews like 'very good', accompanied by 2 or 3 stars.

WHAT?!

Business Idea: Send us the restaurant link, we'll rate it bad from different country. 😂

That’s really stupid. What is the point of reviews if you can’t even give your honest opinion?

I didn’t know that Japan took their review so seriously that they had to bring the FBI from the USA to deal with you.
