I make a full time income out of performing cover songs in my YT channel. My biggest advice would be: don't rely on adsense. Sell albums, sell merch, use crowd funding, etc. Build a business empowered by YouTube, but not dependent on it.

To all who can read my comment, if you want to cover a song just try to change the Genre, and youtube won't be able to copyright you.
I did mistakes from my other videos but I learned from it then applied it to my newest videos.

YouTube copyright claims are pretty dubious. I got 4 copyright claims from a big music label on covers of songs that were created over 60 years ago and is in the public domain.

I make covers of anime theme songs primarily, and so I can imagine I won’t be able to find my songs in the directory since it’s fairly niche as compared to other genres.
So far, I have done well with only some songs being revenue blocked, others willing to share, and a good portion not being caught at all... yet... 🤞
I hope I can transition into creating more of my own original music soon if I could manage to gain more of an audience... but that’s so hard to do... 😭

As far as I know, since somewhere in 2017, it is now impossible for a copyright/content ID claim to lead to a copyright strike. Back in the day if you had multiple claims that were "block worldwide" those could end up turning into strikes. But, this hasn't been the case for a long time.
