Actually, there are several versions. This one particular one was Ovidian and Ovid was kinda a jerk. He more often than not protrayed the goddesses and women as vindictive and petty. Other versions of this myth portrayed Athena in better light giving Medusa powers to protect herself from further violence.

So basically Medusa was the kindest person ever and wanted to serve in Athena’s temple which captured the attention of Poseidon and she regectex him very much which made him angry.All Medusa wanted to do is get away from that stalk- I mean serve Athena. Poseidon went inside Athena’s temple and Athena saw that but punished Medusa so she will have snakes upon her head teeth as sharp as spikes and eyes that will turn anyone she looks at into stone

In the oldest version by the ancient Hesiod she along with her sisters are already monstrous gorgons, however Medusa was the only one that was mortal. I do prefer Ovids version, has why more drama.

Medusa was very pretty! And she would brag about her beauty all the time. She even said Athena wasn’t as pretty. One day she went to Athena’s temple and looked at her reflection in the bronze statues of Athena and said they should be Medusa. Then Athena cursed her with the snake hair and the ugliness. That’s what I heard first

Da Story Of Medusa I Heared Was KIND OF Like This One, But I Think It Was Another God Who Wanted Her So Bad That He- (Best/Polite Way Of Saying It.) Wronged Her Sexually Then Blamed Medusa And Made Somebody Else Turn Her Into a "Freak Of Nature."
