I love how there's dialogue, implying nintendo thought you could actually get 999 stars.

I think it's interesting but humorous how the newer games (Superstars and Jamboree) just don't even bother anymore with the dialogue, but it's still capped at 99 Stars.

I remember once getting 999 coins in Mario Party 2. Didn't think it was actually possible. But I didn't think the cap off was 99 stars. I figured it would be just 9 stars.

With the Mario Party 8 dialogues with Captain Goomba and Holly Koopa, they were both obtained in the 1v1 game modes, where getting just one star on these maps wins you the match immediately.
So naturally there’s no unique dialogue for those instances; but there might’ve been for the regular board maps (including the Boo mansion board too).

Mario Party 2 actually HAD a softlock in this case. If a player had 99 stars and then reached Boo, the option to ask to steal a star is disabled, but the AI would try to select it anyway and just get stuck. It's been done in a tool-assisted speedrun.
It doesn't happen any more in Mario Party 3.

Having 99 or 999 stars is clearly the maximum because it was capped.
