Believe it or not, you can say "no" to the "free" personal training session. I've done it a few times. If they're really insistent here are a few excuses I've given:
1) "I come to the gym to be in my own space and listen to music when I work out, so having to deal with someone while I'm working out really defeats the purpose." (actually kind of true in my case)
2) "I was in an accident a while ago so I have to do a special work out to make sure I don't aggravate my injuries. I've had bad experiences with personal trainers before so I'll pass" (actually also true in my case, at least the injury part)

Also if you're looking to quit a gym and you think they'll try and use a lot of pressure to keep you there, just say you got in a car accident, you can't work out, and you have no idea when you're going to get better. Works like a charm.

Would you like fries with that? ... Fast food workers are trained to upsell too. Biggest scam in the restaurant industry lol make it a combo.

That's actually is not an upsell in the first example. An upsell would be showing you extra amenities of the gym, i.e. towel service, personal training, spa etc.Everything that you WOULD NOT get in your basic package and then selling you on them. The person who said that you get a free personal training session BEFORE they tried to sell you on personal training is NOT a salesman, but a fucking idiot. She merely bent over and offered you the free session from the get-go. I would have fired her on the spot.
