HEAVY VS LIGHT WEIGHT For Muscle Growth (THE TRUTH!)

Having trouble figuring out if you should focus on lifting heavy or light weight for muscle growth? Here's what's worked for me.

Just wanted to expand on a video I made in the past about whether you should ever lift heavy because there are times when it's beneficial to just throw some weight around but as I explain in this video, it's not weight that going to bring your rep range down but simply make your high rep sets even harder.

This is the best advice that I would give my 20 year old self at 37. I ruined several joints lifting too heavy over the years.

Im 17 and I listened to this man, I stopped lifting heavy and now im doing light weight 6 sets of 15-20 reps and I really feel a difference. Best part is that theres no more joint pain.

I'm older (56) and rather muscular, but I haven't had new gains in years until I followed his advice. No more tendon injuries lifting heavy weights. And don't let the lighter weights fool you, Doing 3 sets of 30 reps with a weight that causes failure around that 30 rep range is a much more intense and painful workout than my old heavy weight 10-12 rep range. Following this method, I have added almost an inch to my arms in less than 2 months. The only downside was that I had to buy larger shirts.

You have changed my life. I can’t thank you enough.

Thank you sir, this actually took me over a decade of working out to learn. Heavy weight low reps = injury. Lower weight, high reps, more focus = growth.

Training at home with just a few dumbbells my progress is off the chart when compared to going to the gym and lifting as heavy as my ego allowed.
Thank you for turning me into a stud.

I’m 58 years old and I’ve been lifting weights for about three years now. I switched to this about two weeks ago and I’m having so much fun with it. I do four sets of 10 very slow concentrated movements. It is kicking my ass and I eek out every last two reps to the point where I’m trembling. I’m having so much fun with this and I am no longer bored in the gym. Thank you Ryan! Why would somebody hire a personal trainer when they can watch this guy for free!

Wise words here. Having trained consistently for the last 37 years, I've done unnecessary damage by losing that connection when going too heavy (eg. full pec tear, etc). Approach this craft with the long haul in mind. You want to be solid, strong and healthy enough to be doing this well into your 50's, 60's and beyond. Curb the heavy weight vanity. I know, that's not easy. But it will pay off.

I initially panicked when gyms closed during corona pandemic. I thought I would really struggle with my 5kg dumbells to have effective workouts. I started doing full body 3 sets of 22 every day very slowly paying attention to form and I can honestly say 1 year down the line that I am in the best shape of my life.

I turn 48 in 2 weeks and I have become stronger and more defined since following the vids. I love the info and no BS messages. Thank you

For the last couple of days I’ve been forcing more reps with lower weights instead of trying to add more weight like you preach and in 2 days I can see a very noticeable difference. Thanks and I’ll see you in the next one

I follow similar principle and probs saw it on one of your earlier videos where I do ascending sets so start with a weight where I can reach 15-20 reps, then add 1.25kg and go again trying to reach that 15 rep range. If I hit 20 first set and 18+ second set it's time to up the weight. Been doing this since october time and seen better results than in my previous 5 years weight lifting.
P.S. been subscriber since you had like 10k subs, best fitness youtuber by a mile, no bullshit!

Man Ryan, I know you probably won't see this, but your method for using light to moderate weights is something I've had to do for my sport for about 35 years. ( Racing MX ). Along with breaking almost every single bone in my body at least once ( Some 2 - 3X ) we need to be as strong as possible, have cardio like a triathlete and the flexibility of a gymnast. I've slowed down on my racing, but gawd dang I still love the burn of my workouts. Your videos have been an inspiration in ways you don't even know. Thank you.

Ryan, there are so many people that seek help. I hope you reach out to all America seeing how you teach the truth. The person that taught me was Kelly Hitchcock and he taught me your ways over 20 years ago. You DO know your business. On my jobs I've had men twice my size that were amazed what I could do. I'll be 71 in march and doing things in the gym 16 year old's through my age can't but now I only do my training at home. Thanks and don't give up on your teachings.
