You never looked old in the slightest, yet losing the beard knocked another good 10 years off your face. Looks good! The beard was great, too, though. Lol

That said, I always thought it seemed like Hel was just the standard underworld afterlife for everyone based on how it's usually discussed. Valhalla then, as everyone knows, was specifically for those slain in battle as the word itself implies.

I think the west being so familiar with the modern conception of "Hell" and it being so similar to *"Hel"* has colored modern people's perception of the place, alongside the modern idea of underworlds basically being synonymous with the "bad" afterlife, when that has not generally always been the case.

This video makes me think of a question: When studying a literature or time period that is mainly written about in a different time and culture, as medieval Christian culture and language is different from Norse pagan culture and language, how much do you have to understand the culture of the writers to interpret what they write? As in, does Christian Hell adapt or influence the understanding of Norse Hel in medieval sources and need to be parsed by linguists or historians?

Every person's culture reflects in their ideas of the afterlife but it's more interesting that so many Pre-Christian ideas of the afterlife were so similar.

Red sky at night sailors delight, red sky in morning sailors take warning... some use shepards rather than sailors.

OK but why do you look so good with and without a beard. Respectfully ❤

The backdrop of every video you've made is amazing. Makes the flat part of Sweden look very dull.

What evidence, or lack of evidence suggests that different afterlives were more so literary devices rather than a prominent religious belief?

Regarding this topic, what is the Norse perspective on suicide?

The main query I have about any afterlife is if it's phenomenal as in actions take place there or it's a formless state?

Not to mention the belief in reincarnation with mentions in the poetic edda and at least one saga I can recall. Plus other PIE cultures believing in reincarnation.

I've heard that the word Hel translates to "hidden" as in buried? Does this sound true?

It's almost as if the whole thing has been romanticized, or something! 😮

So Hell is not only a Christian thing but also a Norse thing?
