I mean think about it between the axe and the phone, the phone was the easier choice he's only thirteen and is probably weak from lack of food so even if he could use the axe he would probably get tired first and he would have to make sure the grabber doesn't try to grab the axe because you saw how he grabbed him even though finney was hitting him. One bad move and the grabber could have gotten the axe back and killed him plus he had that awesome moment when the phone rang so slay
