For the secretary of state for education to confuse two Britons of African descent when one (Marcus Rashford) has national significance from campaigning for young schoolchildren whose parents are struggling financially to be fed (in addition to playing for England), while the other (Maro Itoje) is a professional rugby union player for one of the biggest clubs in the UK speaks to a profound level of ignorance on the part of the public official. Worse still, it appears to regard both as part of an anonymous homogenous mass ("you all look alike") with no diversity of talent, skills, aptitude, ambitions or expertise. They may not be all of our people, but they are all our people.

Gavin Williamson could work for 20 lifetimes and not do as much for kids as Marcus Rashford has done in one year.

The Secretary of State should have known who Marcus Rashford is and not because of his football career but because of his tireless prolific campaigning in the same field that Gavin Williamson heads. His own boss has liaised with Marcus so how you can confuse him with someone else is beyond me.

The choice of language - conscious or subconscious - is so telling; "I'm 33, white... just a 'normal' guy". It says so much about the way they see the world - thinking that the world must adapt to them and not the other way round.
