I’ve never been proud to be British, male, straight etc. why would anyone be proud of something they have no control over? I’m proud of my achievements but not over arbitrary things

I'm proud of British comedy, so perfectly showcased with this caller.

There is an old saying that real patriots ask questions. They don't just blindly follow patriotic slogans, flags, symbols and place their hands on their hearts & sing the national anthem. They ask where their country is headed and why and whether their country is living up to its stated ideals.

I find that people who are proud of the “freedom, fairness and equality” we have in the uk are usually the types who actually hate freedom, fairness and equality

“The reason the health service is a mess is because it’s been used a lot”.

No mate, the health service is a mess because of years of mismanagement, under funding and loss of qualified staff.

"Come on, come on. Look, look, when I see a Frenchman eating fish and chips it makes me proud ... to be British!!".

I'm British because my mam gave birth to me here. There are things I like, and there are things I dislike. I've never understood die-hard patriotism. She could have given birth to me on holiday in France for all it matters at the end of the day...

“Isn’t Land Rover owned by an Indian company?”
“Yes but it’s made in Britain”
“So’s my lunch!”

This guys ‘argument’ boils down to English Exceptionalism. When you actually stop to think and compare, it starts to unravel.

The poem by Roger McGough called "Why patriots are nuts in the head" springs to mind.

Keep a Tory government and you can soon be proud of being a third world country

I'm not proud of much. But as Oscar Wilde said, "Patriotism is the virtue of the vicious". We shouldn't gives such love and devotion to this small spit of land on the basis that we were lucky enough to be born here. I'm proud of the people that try to improve the lives of others, not a country that votes for bigots

Caller: "I'm proud to be British! I can name loads of things that make me proud to be British!"

James: "Okay then, what are the things that make you proud to be British?"

Caller: "Yes!"

There is very little to be proud of in Britain at the moment, we are in a very dark place and need a total change in outlook and we need to pull down our politics and rebuild it from the ground up with a positive attitude (no extremism or hate).

Give the guy a break. He's doing his best to be accepted as a British Indian. Coming on expecting to be clapped on the back but instead ending up realising there's no medals awaiting him for his hilarious attempt at kissing the boots of what he thought was a British imperialist officer and a gentleman.

I’m proud of being proud.

This reminds me of the Brexit comments:

Caller: “I can’t wait until we don’t have to follow so many European regulations.

James: “Which ones?”

Caller: “All of them.”

Pride should be reserved to things one has achieved.

Being proud is normally something reserved for something achieved, a tought task/experience completed. One cannot be proud of randomly being born somewhere. You can be happy being born in the UK, or born in Sweden, but you cannot be proud. Too much pride around as it is, and you know what comes after. Feeling pride in something one cannot be proud of, is just another intellectual slip and makes people dummer in general.
