Things Firefighters Say

As a Firefighter, we all know we've said it.

Back when I was a volunteer in Northern California, this was basically how my training captains described pretty much any fire department east of the Rocky Mountains. In a phrase that I'm sure the other firefighters here recognize, "250 years of tradition unimpeded by progress".

I enjoy the joke, but I'm also reminded of this guy on the department who always stepped in when these arguments got out of hand, and shut them down with a few words. He was in his eighties, and he couldn't respond to calls anymore, but he cooked for us, he helped in the office, cleaned the trucks, and helped train the new guys like me. He remembered the days before Scott air packs, thermoplastics, Nomex, and enclosed cabs. Can't remember his exact words, but I remember the gist: "The job is to put the wet stuff on the red stuff and get back in one piece. Use whatever tool, tactic, or trick will get that done fast and safe. All this technology you guys have? If we'd had it, I'd still have some of my friends."

Now, I'm not a firefighter anymore, but the old guys in my profession still say the same thing: "Work the problem, not the aesthetics." All comedy aside, it's a good lesson.

"Perform CPR with my foot very badly" is my codephrase for kicking someone.

A friend of mine spent 900 bucks for his own leather helmet. Never shows up to training though.

"There is no relative with a key?" **holds axe with malicious intent** "Shame!"

[And yes, I am one of the crybabies on the wee-woo wagon who sometimes needs the "big boys" to open doors for me ;P]

Age of growth witnessed in this channel

Early years - some weird washed up Australian dude who is on the fire house Serengeti trying to find the mysterious wildlife.
Today: Some crazy New Yorker/Bostonian hybrid

Love this channel sir. It really helps ease the stress and tension we all feel in this career. The Fire Department Coffee is incredible!! Keep up the good work sir.

emt student doing rideouts in my hometown... every call the ambulance got, my preceptor would yell, "HEY KID JOBTOWN!!!" and every rideout after that, if I heard my callsign, I'd yell jobtown...

The Boston accent with Shipping Up To Boston in the background is perfect and I didn't know that I needed that in my life

I called the "oh, you're a firefighter and a paramedic?" response perfectly and well ahead of time haha.

Now there is such a thing as a Firefighter Paramedic, I am and I love doing both equally. It really pisses me off those hose jockeys who look down on, or refuse to, do EMS. I love helping people period, if I am pulling someone out of a burning house or if I am comforting them after they have lost a loved one, I enjoy both equally. I will say that as the years have rolled by, EMS is easier on my past middle aged body, but then we have rooks for the hard stuff these days
