There are so many new cameras coming out this year, like the Canon EOS R5, R6, Sony A7s iii, and the Blackmagic Ursa 12k, that so many people think they need. When the reality is you can make great content without the newest camera by focusing on other important aspects of filmmaking.

Absolutely fantastic video Foxtail! In my opinion, I think that the Sony NEX 5 would be the best for instances where you need audio. But what about instances where you don't need audio? Say like a music video. At that point would you suggest going all in on a camera with the highest quality or would you still suggest splitting your budget on other equipment and editing? Absolutely great video, keep up the great content! Good to see you're finally get recognized for the awesome YouTuber you always have been!

How did you managed to put an external mic on the NEX 5N?

Yep! Currently Shooting my short film on a nikon d3300 with no dialogue (because audio expensive) I have a cheap condenser mic to capture audio on set and will definitely invest in better audio before buying a new camera. Not just audio, but lights and a monitor and a new lense, way before investing into a new camera. Love videos like this, but I do love looking at cameras i can buy in 5 years time.

So, how did you get the good audio into the NEX-5N (since there's no mic jack on that camera)?

Did you use an external audio recorder and sync it afterward?

Fortunately or unfortunately, there is this list of "approved cameras" that a certain streaming service / studio puts out for its original movies, and you have to spend pretty big to get one of those. And so, real filmmakers are often constrained by this. It's getting more democratized though, especially with the addition of the Panasonic S1H to the list, with the Canon R5 and Sony a7s III probably soon to follow.

Not that I fall into the category of professional filmmaker at all, but I do enjoy photography and making little short movies as a hobby. Unlike that other streaming service, YouTube is a great equalizer when it comes to cameras.

I have always wanted to become a filmmaker but I can't decide what camera to start with. Do you have any recommendations? I would like to make films like action, horror, drama etc. Thank you for any help you can give me. There are so many choices now days. I am not worried about 4k but would love to find something with good quality. Can't decide between Panasonic, Canon, or Sony. Also would like something to get good sound. Thanks!

Watching on my phone, not even full screen, honestly I can’t tell visually without REALLY TRYING to find difference. But based on audio I would click off the bad audio clip if that were a full video on YouTube. Great points!

Ok, first of all, if you are serious about video you NEVER record audio with your camera!!! Have dedicated gear for that! Set up you Z Cam with a proper Mic, Proper audio recorder will have a winning combination! With my BM 6K, I always record audio separately!

You can solve the problem by buying a microphone
