Friedman Fundamentals: Liberal, Libertarian, Classical Liberal

The embrace of liberty is the marker of true liberalism. But the term “liberal” has changed over time. Today many people use it to refer to those who want the government to assume a greater role in determining the lives of individuals. A true liberal is one who believes in a free society and who believes that the government’s primary role is to protect individual liberty.

I'm pro gun, pro small government, and pro low taxes, but central/left on most everything else. I guess I'd be libertarian.

I've recently found that I'm Libertarian, not Conservative (although I do agree with some or even possibly many Conservatives values). I have been relatively naive to other political views since America, as it stands today, has practically split completely between Democrats (Progressives/Liberals) and Republicans (Conservative). The last time I even heard of the word Libertarian was nearly 10 years ago (I'm 28, so before I could legally vote) and back then I didn't know the exact definitions and values of these differing political views were.

I may be wrong, and feel free to comment or debate if someone disagrees, but I feel the most American political view is that of libertarians (true liberals). Human rights, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are the values America was founded on, and what we should still value above all else. Regardless of age, race, gender, creed, or religious affiliation, we should all be free to pursue what makes us happy and what makes us.. well, us. As long as violence (whether physical or coercion) is absent and there is no risk to endangering your neighbors, you should be able to think, do, believe, say, or live however you please. No one should ever tell you what you can or cannot be. But the same should be expected of you. You should not be able to force someone else to see things your way or live like you do (for good or ill on their part).

I do think rehabilitation centers, counselling, employment assistance, and even some forms of life quality assistance should be provided for the homeless, drug abusers, and even criminals. A human is still human. We should not readily condemn a person to an isolated, slow death if we can help. But those benefit programs would be charity based, not government funded. I believe everyone deserves a second chance and that second chance should mean something. Inspire them to be better people and not make the same mistake again. We should find out why someone is a repeat offender rather than just assume they are a lost cause.

There are people who need help, and I believe that help can be provided through community and neighborly love/compassion. I may be a hopeless romantic when it comes to politics and my faith, but I believe, without a doubt, that America can be better. We can all be better if we show more love and understanding towards our fellow neighbors, than labelling them as enemies for a viewpoint that rivals your own. This tribalism between the Left and the Right is literally tearing this country apart and the madness doesn't seem to be slowing down. We should strive to balance logic/rationality with compassion/empathy, efficiency with morality, and justice with righteousness.

Doing what's right is very seldom the easiest thing to do. Becoming a better person is easier said than done. And seeking immediate justice does not always make you in the right. I do believe justice should be swift and decisive, but I also believe it should be constructive in it's criticism. Obviously there are crimes that we cannot fathom understanding or forgiveness we are still human and flawed. In those circumstances, the judgement and forgiveness would be up to the discretion of God.

I have been reborn of late through my newfound faith, political understandings, and my conviction in my beliefs pertaining to morality, liberty, and justice. It's strange to me how quickly my life has turned around as of late. Just 2 months ago, I was a skeptical agnostic. Now I am reading the Bible daily, praying for the rejuvenation, revival, and healing of this beautiful country. I know America could be the greatest country that ever existed, but it would take work, sweat, tears, money, and cooperation for my ideas to come to fruition. Do I ever think it will happen? Possibly someday. Maybe not in my lifetime or even a few generations from now, but something has to give. We cannot continue down this path and expect to remain intact as a nation.

Settle down conservatives, this is educational, not meant to attack anyone.

monopolies: *controls extreme amounts of everyone’s lives*
people: Hey let’s regulate that so people aren’t being oppressed by predatory practices
libertarians: idk that doesn’t sound liberal to me, I on the other hand welcome our overlords with open arms

I mean in theory yes, individualism would be the best or a great idea. But what happens is that without any government enforced restrictions on capitalism, they can treat workers however they want. Which is why some presidents decided to place restrictions, and made America a better and freer country for workers because of it.

Well, our founding fathers created the articles of confederacy after that and it failed miserably. The government had no power, it was basically anarchy. Then the constitution was written, which limited the scope of government, but also had the ability to do things.

People need to stop trying to change definitions of words. I am a liberal and a feminist, and I was taught that meant I support equal rights for both men and women and I support individual rights and freedom
