As many folks ask where to buy concrete or stucco bonding agents, use Quikrete or Weld-create.
Will a new stucco finish stick to the painted stucco? How long will a new stucco finish last?
Do stucco finishes adhere permanently?

How to apply Quikrete bonding agent for prepping walls for a stucco finish.
Prep your stucco walls for a stucco finish, bonding agent, with liquid lath.
We’re rolling or painting on Larsen’s bonding agent.
Quikrete bonding agents are found at all Home depots and lowes and work just as well.

In this video, I explain some stucco bonding agent tips as to why a bonding agent should be applied over a painted stucco surface and not simply poured into the mixer.

When applying a color coat stucco finish, we want it to adhere to the stucco.
In This video, my son Jason reminds me to explain why I dilute this bonding agent.

Please note this is how I do (my) bonding agents. Although, of course, sometimes, I double it when I go from certain stucco to concrete. That’s another story.
Buy the Quikrete if you don’t want to guess.
Quikrete should not be diluted, it should be painted or rolled onto a very clean surface. Now you can stucco over that surface. Never add a bonding agent into any stucco or plaster as that renders that bonding agent useless.

Lastly, it does not have to be pretty; thus, don’t go too thick. Perhaps if you do this, you should watch the video below about what happens if your bonding agent is too thick or too thin?

Hey Kirk can I put the bonding agent the day before I do my stucco repair. The old stuff is coming off in sheets. I’ve scraped and pressure washed to get all the loose stuff off. I was hoping to do the bonding agent today and start fresh with the stucco tomorrow

Great informative video on bonding agents! After watching your videos, and getting some practice over the past year, I repaired my Aunt and Uncle's color coat in December of 2011 - It was bubbling and lifting badly on one side that gets a lot of sun and weather exposure. They told my when they color coated the house in 2004 the guy waited too long to color coat after applying the bonding agent; he used a clear bonder and mixed it in the stucco mix. Now I know why it was coming off in sheets!

Thank you for this video. I suspected this might work but I was getting unsure info from the paint store and the product label. But I've used it for plastering over old paint so I figured if it bonds to old paint why wouldn't new paint bond to it. Your video and experience helped me confirm and try it out.

Howdy dawaves22, thank you for the compliment.
I recommend you first you pressure wash the walls, then apply a bonding agent, next apply a skim coat. After the skim coat has cured then apply back to back coats of SBSMF.
Best wishes and have a good evening.

Good morning jemocal, I have gotten several e-mails in the last month very similar to yours. It seems folks that don’t know how to repair the stucco just cover the areas up with wood trim. If the material you apply is soupy add more sand or stucco to make it workable. A fella cant apply mud if it spills over the sides of a hawk.
Best wishes and have a great day!

Hey Gilbert, this is what I do if I am applying a stucco color finish over painted stucco. If I am going concrete to concrete I sometimes double the amount, it all depends on what I am trying to achieve. Whatever the product you decide on, read their instructions as different bonding agents different rules.
Best wishes,

Hey Savage. Over the past 25 years I have diluted the bonding agent I prefer to use, however I'm sure all bonding agent shouldn't be diluted. Read the instructions. Some bonding agents are made specifically for concrete to concrete so it's too strong for adhering stucco to painted stucco. Do a test patch, apply a bit of color wait until it dries, if it spider checks it's too strong.
Best wishes.

Awesome! Hopefully some of that Bay Area cloud cover you guys are used to will come down my way! As always, thanks to you and your family's time and effort into putting these videos on Youtube!

Howdy altoegovcl, I don’t like to criticize other folks work plus its difficult responding without truly knowing what that fella did. If he were applying an acrylic finish he would first apply a primer then a finish coat, if he were applying a color finish over a brown coat no bonding agent would be necessary. Over a painted surface a bonding agent is necessary.
Thanks for watching and have a great day!

Good evening jemocal, the way you describe cleaning the area will work, I general use either pressure washing or a wire brush sometimes. After you clean the area, you can apply a caulking, if you’re not certain about a good bond, go ahead and apply a bonding agent over the entire area and plaster as usual.
Best wishes.
Thanks for watching and have a good evening.

Oppps, you’re not supposed to do that, although I have read on some bottles you can, but I am an applicator not an engineer. I guess if one really researches it from the description or instructions it may mean something else. For example (text coats) which are primarily paint, bonding agents, aggregates and colors, these have bonding agent in them but the paint also adhere well to many surfaces from stucco to wood.
Thanks for the comment and have a great day!

Hi Kirk, thanks for all the great videos. Ive been following you for some time now. Ive learnt alot from you.

Question...would you cut the bonding agent if you where doing a scratch coat over painted block? Or do you only cut it when doing a color coat?

Thanks again 👍

Hey dawaves22, why hire us when you got it down. Your methods are consistent with what i would do. If you and say one other guys are going to do this stay out of the sun if you can, or you will have joints. Watch where the sun rises and understand the direction it’s moving towards and your own application abilities and keep away from it. This is easy for me to say, but hopefully you have a cloudy day your fist time applying a color finish.
Best wishes, kirk

I should have mentioned that there is at worst a 6 in gaps surrounding cracked stucco and window. A horrible job concealed by a poor frame. I noticed a horrible draft and coldness in winter. I repaired one window using "premix stucco." It took several coats as it was kind of soupy. Thanks Kirk.

Hi Kirk! Great Videos, I literally spent 2 hours watching most of them :)
Question: I own a 1920's spanish style home and over the years, there are several different types of texturing on the building. What do you recommend I do to ultimately get it to a uniform style. I really like Santa Barbera finish but not sure if I need to sandblast off color coat or if I can put on a skim coat using your bonding agent technique. thanks for posting your videos!

Thanks for the reply! Followup, If I just wanted to do a Float Finish, can I pressure wash, then apply your 50/50 Weldcrete Water mix, then apply a color coat and float it? I would hire you guys but I don't think you have an LA office :) Keep those videos coming! Have a great day!
