In this video Greg shows you how to read a carfax or a vehicle history report and what to look out for. There are many hidden pieces of information the Carfax report can provide. A vehicle identification number, otherwise known as the VIN is important and can provide a great deal of information on the used car that you are interested in buying. Things like highway miles, in service date, warranty related information, dealer services, failed smog checks, auction history, miles per year and odometer rollback are all important pieces of information for you to know before purchasing your car from a private party or buying from a dealer.

Never allow a dealer to just show you a print out of a Carfax. Make them email or text you a link to the Carfax report. For additional measure I would recommend pulling an Autocheck report and comparing it with the dealers Carfax link. Autocheck reports can be had free by simply finding an online dealer that uses them and replace the vin in their url with the one you want.

This video could be misleading, there are car owners that service their vehicles themselves or have it serviced by a mechanic that does not pay carfax their fees to add the service on the report. Nothing wrong with picking the one with the history but telling people to not waste their time with those that do not show the history seems wrong.

except when there IS an accident history, you get very little detail of severity of the accident. I DID see one report, though, that used the term 'moderate damage' and there was an explanation of what that meant. however, on most reports, there is little information regarding severity.

Question my husband is a professional mechanic (he does that for a living) and I’ve hardly ever taken my car to a dealer to get any type of service other than alignment, does that present an issue to a buyer since I don’t take it to the dealer so it won’t show as serviced much on the report ???

Im selling my car and a potential buyer asked me for my vin number so she can look it up on car fax, I’m worried about her seeing my personal info, will she be able to see my personal info??

When a dealership does a diagnosis on your car and gives you an estimate, do other dealerships have access to this data if you never do the work? For example, if my car was found to have water in the transmission, if I opt to not fix it at this one dealership (cancelling the work order), will another dealership typically see that diagnosis and estimate? Also, will that diagnosis end up in CarFax if the work was never even done?

Hi Graig, did a carfax on a lexus rx 350. came up as accident side swipe, had been sold at auction but the interesting thing too is that there was a "not actual mileage" warning. car is advertised as 148k but in the report it says the first owner had until 156k and the second until 175k....I'm seeing yellow maybe even red flags. I would have a reputable 3rd party mechanic check it out but only (like yo)once it passes preliminary inspection. thoughts?

Instead I also am eye balling an 056 Lexus with the Toyota 3.3 v6. I've heard you speak highly of that engine also. Cheers buddy!😉

If the car didn't get oil change at dealer, will it still show up in carfax? To get a used car get carfax and pre-buy inspection, anything else?

I live in Florida and I’m looking at a car from a local dealer. The carfax says the car came from Oklahoma sold as a fleet or lease vehicle with 36k miles on it just a few months back. Is that a red flag? Why would a dealership buy a car from halfway across the country?

I think CarFax is an ok tool, but I do not understand how can a car have no accidents but damage. I recently sold my car, and I was rear ended on it. The Carfax showed no accidents. Like really. No accidents, but rear bumper damage.
Very misleading

Hi, the carfax unlimited reports option for $54.99 states: " unlimited reports by US license plate valid for 60 days"; is this option only valid for searches via license plate or could I also search via VIN? Thank you.

Hi, I was sent the CarFax buy the owner, but there is a discrepancy - there are 13 service records on the CarFax she sent, and 15 when I put the VIN: 1J4FA69S86P777454 into CarFax. CarFax doesn't give me the full report, the owner sent it to me. Could it be fake? Does that happen?
