*Update: Carfax finally refunded me after months of ghosting my emails

If you want to sell your car, SKIP Carfax, go to your dealership or wherever you get your car maintained, and ask them for your maintenance reports. You should be able to get them FOR FREE. Don't get scammed. I still have yet to hear back from their "customer service".

It is absolutely true that Carfax is a garbage company. Dealerships partner with Carfax to make their trash vehicles appear more desirable, but there is often extremely important info missing from Carfax reports. I believe this is intentional because they are paid so much money by dealerships so they want to protect that industry. I have personally been burned by incomplete Carfax reports twice. This guy is 100% correct. That isn't to say that some people won't get lucky and actually get a accurate report, but that is the exception, not the rule.

From what I can tell based on just about every YouTube video every single car sale site can’t be trusted and neither can the dealership and your house security doesn’t work and you’ve missed the bus on the recent drop shipping trend and social media trend and just give up now because everything you try won’t work and nothing ever does what it says it will.

I was reading the carfax report provided by the dealer, for a car I’m interested in buying. It states that a 15k service was performed, also a 20k and a 25k service was performed at this same dealer. It is supposed to be a previously leased car, so I suppose this could be possible, except that the car has only 17k miles on the odometer, for 4 years! Does something seem suspect here? Is this car too good to be true? And what’s with the Carfax report?

I ordered a report on Sunday, paid for it, and 3 days later still no report. I filed a complaint with them and they sent me back an email acknowledging receipt, set up a case number, and claimed that a case worker would be in touch. So far nothing.

I used CarFax and bought three reports since I was researching what car to buy at the time. I even used my AAA discount. I had no problem with it.

I sold a Toyota Camry, original owner, and I lost buyers who were looking for a one owner vehicle because Carfax reflected the bank title transfer as another owner, but would not say who was the "first owner".
Buyers would say dude why lie, you are not the original owner, when the first owner was the bank title transfer. I came to figure out it was that because of the month and yr it happened which was when I moved to another state.
Luckily I had my oil service records from new and showed the potential buyer all the service records, finally got my asking price. Carfax provided inaccurate information of my vehicle.
Even at the dealer when trying to trade in the salesperson would not believe me I was the original owner and just because of that they were offering me less for it, which of course I walked away and sold it private party.

I bought 3 and got charged the appropriate $60 so I'll leave it at that but I won't buy anymore. Do you think autocheck is more legit? Thanks

Good advice my friend. I’m selling a friends jeep.
Got two interested buyers bother directed me to get a car fax report. Both of them friendly using first names and both using the same phrases.
I was very suspicious. I researched a bit and found out it’s a scam. So I deleted their messages. Thanks from Canada 🇨🇦

What about the vehicle side of things I recently purchased a car from this website and now that I heard they are a scam. Can they lie about the history of the car and accidents it’s been in or that part is trustworthy?

Make sure you do your own due diligence. If you can't, have someone assist you. Look at the car you are interested in buying with open eyes, don't be blinded by the fluff. When the car warranty is finished, maintenance reports are golden. Check oil, tire condition, battery, body condition, and underbody. Rusted floor pans and rockers in many places can not be safetied or insured.

The easier way is to ask seller if it is clean title. If they show you title you don't need CARFAX. If there was a few minor fender benders, so what? You just don't want rebuilt title or salvage. Then just ask for maintenance records. If the owner has none and has nothing to say, and don't mention that they do it themselves, it likely means they didn't take good care of it. If the car had more than one owner it makes it even more difficult to know. Even a mechanic won't be able to tell. They can only look at current condition.
