How You’re Drawing a Katana Incorrectly

Показать описание
A common mistake when drawing your katana is this: However, what you should do is this: Extend your left arm in front of you, and draw by pulling the Saya (sheath) back. There are mainly three reasons why this is benefitial. You are maintaining distance from the opponent. Your draw will be faster by pulling your Saya back. You can hide your blade until the very last moment you draw. Let’s go deeper into the third reason. During the Edo period (1603~1868), regardless of who killed whom, the one who showed 3 Sun of his blade first was considered guilty of a duel among samurai. This means you don’t want to show your blade until the very last moment you draw. By bringing the katana out in front of you, you can draw faster and hide the blade as long as possible. “A common mistake when drawing a katana” is probably the least relatable intro

You forgot to tell your opponent, “OK, let’s dance!”

Imagine it is 1783 and you are a Samurai, you both go into Duel mode and stay sheated but already pushed out all the way, looking each other and finally the silence breaks by one of you saying "I see, you know your laws" and the other says "I reckon you do too" and after some time slowly putting it back in while glancing at each other and then slowly starting to walk away 😂😂😂

I’ve been self training for a bit then finally found a ryuha around my area. Ever since I saw the throw draw I practiced it 24/7 now I can do it very effectively!

Geez, all your videos are so thoughtfully explained...that's why I love watching them so much!! ❤

The 3rd reason in this video makes sense for an additional reason. After watching your demonstration, it appeared that taking longer to draw the katana suggested a sense of hesitance
...whereas, the faster draw suggested a sense of confidence

...in terms of criminality...I think some might associate hesitance with guilt 😊

The correct method is also better body mechanics, less over extention, less balance compromise generally more quiet elegant movement and more complete and continuous cover of your midline.

when I learned it. I was told to do it from midway. So drawing the katana by pulling the sheath, and the blade simultaneously.

I'll keep this in mind next time I have to duel a samurai

I also like those techniques where they just PUNCH the other guy in the solar plexus with the kashira and you don’t even see the habaki come out of the saya. That technique just so awesomely screams, “B***H, GET BACK. Boy, have ya lost your mind, cause I’ll help ya find it!”
