While there is a general outline for how to use a katana, significant differences in katanas ("heavy cleaver" vs "balanced and whippy", if you will) may require an altering of applied general knowledge.

I for me, I have left over of a broken fishing pole. I think that would be a good start to work on the forms, plus you can kind of do tricks that you see in anime with out getting hurt, and it’s light. But it think it’s would be a good start to build some muscle memory. And then go up to a training sword which is heavier to work the muscle. Just so you feel like you at least know what your doing and your comfortable with moving your arms and stuff.
