The Most Common Misconception about Katana Drawing #Shorts

Before I started training in Iaido katana drawing, I too thought that it’s your right hand that pulls out the katana. However, that is a misunderstanding. It’s actually your left hand holding the sheath.

There are mainly two reasons why this is very important.

1. Drawing quicker
2. Controlling the direction of the slash

In an actual fight in iaido, the person who can draw the katana faster is the person who wins. By using both of your handsyou can maximize the speed of your draw.

Secondly, only by controlling the sheath with your left hand can you adjust the direction of the draw. You must be able to draw the cut in all directions to adapt to any situation.

It's crazy how similar a duel with katanas is to a old western high noon duel with pistols

Omg. When I read "Katana drawing" I thought Shogo was drawing "a picture of Katana" 😂 I'm sorry, English is not my first language...

This is interesting. I've definitely seen anime characters put pressure on the sheath to control the direction of the draw, but I didn't understand it at the time.

Wow it's so obvious yet Ive never heard that before, " the person I who draws the Katana faster wins!"
In mangas and anime the drawing of the Katana is sometimes à long tense standoff.

It makes me think of shooting a heavy bow. You want to push the bow away as you pull the string back.

Never thought about it till now but that makes a lot of tactical sense. Thanks for clearing that up.

That's why Jetstream Sam put a blank powered ejecting mechanism in his sheath to launch his sword out.

Changing the orientation of the sheath.. I wish I learned about this sooner. Very cool!

Beauty of Katana is the skill that the Katana trainees acquire and perform in the way they move their Katana. I love it

Very interesting. Thank you for clarifying what is going on. I won't be taking up this training, but it adds richness to my observation.
