Are there girls in engineering? Is it common to see women in STEM? These are commonly asked questions and a lot of you want to know the answer, so you’ll find the answers in this video! Since I’m a guy, I obviously can’t answer them, so I asked my fellow engineering female classmates for their answers. Timestamps are as follows:

00:00 Intro
01:37 How many girls were in your classes?
02:47 What made you choose engineering?
04:01 Do you feel like you get treated differently (by profs) because you’re a girl?
05:13 Which engineering major do you think has the most girls? Why?
06:14 Which engineering major do you think has the least girls? Why?
07:11 Do you think guys in your class have a crush on you?
08:02 Are guys in engineering awkward?
08:58 How do people react when they find out you’re an engineer?
11:08 When did you first learn what engineering was?
12:12 Do you regret choosing engineering?

Janeen that "Alhamdulliah profs are rude to both guys and girls" was awesome 😂

mechatronics engineering student here, and the times there were more than 10 girls in them were so rare it's sad actually. but even more underrepresented than students were women professors.
it does feel like the younger generations of girls are choosing engineering, and it's heartwarming

There were a few in all my classes. I remember our professor asked the class about why there aren't more. One guy said they aren't good at math and he got booed lol. Two of the best engineering professors I had were women. They were very good at testing on material that they actually taught. So many male professors would teach on thing and test on totally obscure engineering problems.

its hard to find the Engineering girls, and there is always stereotypes toward the engineering girls, I appreciated you produce tis video to make people understand no stereotype against the engineering girls.

I developed the passion for engineering since 5th grade. Completed high school and found out I love everything about mechanical Engineering. Went to University and OH boy the criticisms whenever I go to companies for internships were insane.
People ask me a lot of questions like I'm out of my mind for choosing that field.
I think it's basically because of my country. Gradually loosing my passion but I pray I find myself around people who will appreciate my field of studies

Good luck to all the engineering girls. You are amazing.

I think there's more nerdiness in physics/pure science majors than in engineering.

Nice collab, Tamer.

I felt like I related mostly with Hosna. That advice of taking off from school for a while is one I took. Went one year in college for electrical engineering. I just wanted to be sure engineering is the route I want to take for my career. Now I've been working for 6 months. I'm still trying to find my passion. I am into mechanic... Thank you Hasna.

I am so happy I found this video. gives me more awareness over what to expect while studying civil engineering.

Wow love this insight. I will start in about a month and a half as an engineer major. I was little scared of being a female in engineering. I love this makes me feel more comfortable of the environment.

This is amazing!!!! I don’t feel alone anymore.
I’m a female engineering student and I’m currently doing my degree in electrical and computer engineering.
It’s truly amazing to see other females doing different thematic areas around the world 🙏 what a brilliant video idea Tamer 👏🏻.

Adding my two cents to the advice section: The schools you go to care about their graduation rate, so they want you to do well and they have faith that you’ll do well. Keep pushing to all my fellow mechE students

I did materials engineering at uoft and i never realized there were so few of us, but we were only 23% of the class. I actually took a Process Simulation and Computer Design course in my fourth year where the total class size was 10 people, and I was the only girl 😅

In tunisia there are a lot of girls in engineering or women in stem in general, in fact 60% of students in my engineering school are girls!

I was lucky to be part of a mechanical engineering undergrad batch with a grand total of 3 girls 😂 We had the most girls. Of class of about 20 something.

TLDR: I think theres a mix of people. theres the bigots, theres those that are avoidant bc theyre unfamiliar, theres ppl who treat u normally, and theres those that give you special treatment. Also, the education environment feels more accepting than the employment environment.

i just finished my first year of mechanical engineering and so far ive taken 2 design classes. my first one i was in a group of all girls. my professor was a bit of a bigot in general towards minorities and he gave us a harder time when we were giving presentations but i think it was just to piss us off cuz we all ended up with decent grades lol, so basically it was just pettiness. my second design class, i was in a group of 3 girls and 1 guy. he treated us like we were his bros. my professor was a pretty chill person in general and kinda uplifted us actually. well there was an instance i used a fabric made of crochet for our project, and we were struggling with making the project work, so my prof was very skeptical about it and blamed the crochet, but it ended up not being the problem. I think that's just the engineering world not being familiar with more "feminine" crafts, but crochet is such a valuable handicraft that brings a lot to the table. kind of an untapped world.

My theory classes now- in materials science, i was one of 2 girls in the class, and towards the middle of the semester the only girl that showed up. I know there was a group chat that no one invited me to, and none of the ppl in my class spoke to me. In mechanics of solids, there were actually several girls, but thats because they were from different engineering majors. The guys in my major did not speak to me except one. He was very popular and had a lot of friends, but his friends from our major did not speak to me ever even when we were in a group setting. he was the only one who'd speak to me. The professors never treated me any differently. Actually I think my solids professor was more lenient with me bc the syllabus stated no late submissions for homework were allowed but he let me submit my missing homework after the semester ended to boost my grade lol (with a penalty but still) and he rounded my grade up.

In terms of ppls reactions to me telling them my major- when i tell women, they're like omg you're so smart good for you etc. The only back lash I got was when i told my family. My dad was originally disapproving and while he didnt tell me explicitly he didnt want me to do it, hed make subtle jabs at it here and there. my grandpa on my dads side straight up told me it was for men, and my uncle on my dads side is against women working in general lol. but my mom's side is fine with it.

Overall, I think theres a mix of people. theres the bigots, theres those that are unfamiliar, and theres ppl who dont gaf. i think ppl get scared away from engineering because they think its hell for women and you're gonna be treated specifically worse than others, but from my experience so far thats not the case, at least in the education sense. HOWEVER i will say at career fairs and recruiting sessions, recruiters HAVE treated me as if i was stupid. ive been ignored, interrupted, and shoved to the side for other candidates in the middle of me talking. So i think the world of employment is still behind. hopefully by the time i graduate things will be okay.

Wow, it's incredible to hear the firsthand experiences of these talented female engineers. Their determination and passion for their fields is truly inspiring. As a mechanical engineer and engineering content creator myself, I appreciate their perspective and the efforts being made to increase diversity in engineering. Let's continue to support and encourage more girls to pursue STEM careers. Together, we can create a more inclusive and innovative future! 👩‍🔬🚀

as a future aerospace engineering student, i find this video very helpful, because as a girl i often feel left out during advanced physics and competitions in high school. though now i am more confident. LET'S GO STEM GIRLZZZ💅 i wish a great career for each of the girls in this video, i love you❤❤❤
