Where is the best place in the universe to look for life?
With the discovery of water in the atmosphere of the exoplanet k218b we are closing to answering if is there life on other planets? As well, is there life in our solar system? Could there be life on the moons of Jupiter, Europa and Enceladus.Or have we already found life in meteorites like the Allan hills 84001? And with the discovery of interstellar objects like oumuamua and comet 2I/Borisov, do they carry life through panspermia through the interstellar medium?

Professor Abel Mendez is a planetary astrobiologist and Director of the Planetary Habitability Laboratory at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo. His research focuses on the habitability of Earth, the Solar System, and extrasolar planets. Prof. Méndez is a NASA MIRS Fellow with physics and astrophysics research experience at Fermilab, NASA Goddard, NASA Ames, and the Arecibo Observatory.

Please bring Prof Mendez on again in the future! His focus on theory led the interview deeper into the complexity of what we don't know than I've seen in a discussion in a while. Also, isn't it nice as a writer to have someone point out all these little world building elements.

Just rang the bell.

This is very useful for my sci Fi series. Creating a few solar systems and crave information.

I just love it when professional broadcasters do their own podcasts.

The idea of a planet _better_ suited to life processes than Earth, I find especially fascinating. We live our whole lives on this one planet, and it's all we ever know as far as direct experience with planets goes, and our neighboring planets pretty much suck for picnics and impromptu baseball games, so we tend to look at our Earth as the epitome of habitability, the alpha as it were. But, it's only our inescapable proximity to this planet and our lack of experience with any other habitable world that blinds us to what else might be out there. Imagine a world with such lush resources that life evolves without much or even any competition at all, or competition of a kind that doesn't require other creatures to die to satisfy hunger or the ability to procreate. Then too, would we have ever left the jungles or caves if we'd had no significant survival pressure? We might be as successful as trees - covering the temperate zones of the entire Earth and doing wonders for soil and herbivores and such, but never, _ever_ doing more than waving around in the wind and singing songs about water and sunlight. It's a thing to ponder - the survival pressures of this world and our mad obsession with competition may be absolutely vital to our existence as we know it. We might find "intelligent" life on a paradise planet and be disappointed to find that their highest achievement is the yearly booger tasting convention from which scores of Ghooahts and Nerfufles of the entire planet gather in one region while floating lazily upon the Great Waters in the hollowed out shells of fallen giant mushroom pods. A fun day for us humans, maybe, but a very bad day for the creatures on planet Guurhuncik as they are suddenly introduced to the idea of fight or die.

I like that you don't EVER refer to other star systems as "Solar systems". You specifically refer to the Solar system as the one we inhabit, because you understand that Sol is the proper name of the sun and thus that is why this is the Solar system, just as the Vega system is the Vega system and the Rigel system is the Rigel system. It always annoys me when scientific talking heads screw that up and talk about "Solar systems", it's like talking about other United States instead of countries.
