This song is for my stepfather, Eric Steele. He treated my Mom like a queen, became the father my sister and I never had, and we were destined to have a happy life together. Unfortunately, the cancer in his body derailed those plans and claimed his life. He passed away on March 29 at around 10:45 pm. He will forever be missed.

I think this song is the most heartbreaking when u dont interpret it as someone who hasnt moved on from a past relationship, but instead as "the person im with isnt the person i love anymore cause they have changed, but when i look in their eyes sometimes i still remember the person they used to be, whom i fell in love with. I met my now fiance through my best friend. He passed last Halloween very suddenly. He was 26. I wouldnt have my wife or my son if it wasnt for him, and I never got to say thank you for giving me everything I have.

As someone who lost my husband to Covid, I find myself doing this exact thing when I’ve dated new people. I fool myself into thinking that I’ve maybe found love again, but mostly I’m just looking for my husband’s eyes to be looking back at me again. This song hurts. But it’s beautiful.
