Japan plans military build-up as China, Russia stoke war fears

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Friday announced the country's biggest military build-up since World War Two with a $320 billion plan that will buy missiles capable of striking China and ready it for sustained conflict, as regional tensions and Russia's Ukraine invasion stoke war fears.

His government worries that Russia has set a precedent that will encourage China to attack Taiwan, threatening nearby Japanese islands, disrupting supplies of advanced semiconductors and putting a potential stranglehold on sea lanes that supply Middle East oil.

Kishida told a news conference that the current capabilities of Japan's Self Defense Forces were insufficient and that the security environment around the country was becoming severe.

He said China was posing a challenge to peace and security for Japan and in the world.

With THAT amount of money invested in defense spending, I predict Japan is going to be virtually a massive defense blockade wall for most of the Pacific from the threat of either invasion or nuclear strike from either Russia, China or North Korea!

I can already see the Japanese military establishing and fortifying all the islands from Sakishima to Hokkaido facing all nations across the Sea of Japan with the following: anti-aircraft and anti-warhead radar and defenses; naval bases backed by land-and-air-based counter-defensive vehicles and ICBMs; fleets of submarines, destroyers and aircraft carriers patrolling the Sea of Japan with their focus spanning from the southern tip of South Korea to Sakhalin Island; aerial bases with Joint Strike Fighters and radar-guided missile outposts; emergency networks set up to evacuate civilians to Japan's western half; blockades for any export shipping from North Korea, China and Russia to Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand; biochemical weaponry to hit selected pivotal ports and military targets on the Asian coast if ANY part of Japan is hit... I hope this island nation I love so much can prove far more formidable than it was during WWII! And let's not forget how the US will have to provide additional financial, technological, troop and weaponized aid to any American military bases already established on Okinawa!

Judging from China`s sharp increase of military budget and her explicit intention to invade Taiwan by force, I welcome Japan`s firm decision to double her defense cost up to 2% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) within the next five years. But I have to say that Japan should have increase military expenditure much earlier. I hope Japan should strengthen its military tie with the United States in order to deter war in Asia Pacific region.
