Excellent analysis. In the old days, when diesel was significantly cheaper than gas and diesel engines were not as complex as they are today, diesel was a good alternative provided that:
1. You drove a long distance each day.
2. You were pulling heavy loads on your trailer.
3. You were carrying heavy loads in your pickup box.
When these conditions were met, even though you'd pay more upfront for a diesel and spend more on maintenance and repairs, it would still be advantageous with a diesel engine.

Today, the upfront cost of the diesel, complexity and cost of repairs and maintenance, the higher cost of diesel fuel, and the added requirement of DEF has negated all of the advantages. In addition, don't forget that although a diesel engine may last longer than a gas, the rest of the truck will eventually fall apart around both motors. Then, you have to factor how much money you want to spend to keep an older truckers going.

Way back in the late 1990s, I had a 1992 Ford F350 with the 7.3 naturally aspirated diesel. The motor was awesome and it got religiously 16L/100 km in the city. (I live in Canada). A typical gas motor such as the 5.7 Vortec V8 from GM would use a lot of more gas. Diesel was 40 cents/litre back then while gas was 70 cents/litre. However, when I had to do things like oil changes, replace the fuel injectors and glow plugs, the fuel savings was quickly gone. From that experience, I learned to keep things simple and stick with a simple gas engine.

Diesels are cool and do work in the conditions I mentioned above but in most applications like stop and go lawn care or construction where the trucks will sit for long periods of time when you're on the job site, the gas engine is the best option.

We did a towing test on the channel hauling our Bobcat E35 on our Diamond C equipment trailer. We used a 2002 and 2015 6.0 gas trucks and a 2007 LBZ Duramax (all 2500hd Silverado's). Gas got about 6.5-7 mpg towing and the LBZ got about 8.5 mpg. We now have a 2018 3500hd with the L5P Duramax. We need to do another tow test with the newer diesel. I think it will be about 50% better MPG than the gas trucks. As far as our newer trucks we plan to purchase gas trucks. Newer diesel trucks have too many emissions and electronic issues. Like you said they are fun to drive and have a little more pep when towing heavy. But honestly the 2015 feels much slower on acceleration but in reality it's seconds, not minutes.

That was a great synopsis! I, too agree this day and age gas is the better value. When I bought my first diesel truck the fuel was at least 25 cents per gallon less than low grade gasoline. Not anymore. The diesel pick up market exploded in the mid ‘90’s with direct Injection and turbos and the infamous B series Cummins in the freshly redesigned Dodges. I remember driving a 6.9IDI Ford ambulance back in the day and thinking who would want to own such a pathetic performing vehicle. Then the 7.3 IDI came out and any excitement dwindled as it wasn’t much better. So, when Powerstroke made it’s debut I wasn’t getting my hopes up. Until I drove one! Wow, that thing just absolutely rocked! It changed my perception of diesel and I just had to have one for myself.

I’m 17 I have a 2017 F-350 6.7 and I do half mowing and half landscaping so I definitely don’t need a diesel for a mowing trailer but when I’m hauling and excavator or a skid steer or even my dump trailer it is really nice to have a diesel. Also the exhaust brake is a really nice feature to have being able to stop is important. At the end of the day I really like how it sounds it’s cool and having boost is fun

Great point! Older diesels before the emissions last longer and better fuel mileage.

I think you just talked yourself into the answer; for YOU the gas truck is the right choice. The combination is even better when you have heavy stuff to haul, but gas is going to be the better financial alternative for the LCK Team.

Owned both I have transitioned to gas. Diesels are great till you have to pay the diesel mechanic. I was fortunate enough I worked on it myself a lot, mine was a 7.3 one of the easiest. I would recommend gas and the new gas engines coming out are making a lot of power.

Unless you're hauling fifth wheel trailers With mid size excavators Or back hoes it's not worth it to buy Cost prohibited I should

My buddy has a fairly decent size excavator and He can profit $15, 00 - 30, 000 dollars in a day 8 hours off of it He could afford to replace the diesel engine if he has to on the truck In fact he just got rid of the pickup truck and bought a day cab Kenworth went all

The only really big difference between diesels and gas, is that diesel engines get 2 times better gas mileage then the gas

Pulling anything under 6k lbs regularly, a gas truck is probably the way to go. Cheaper cost of entry
