RAM 2500 Cummins DIESEL vs GAS (6.4 Hemi) | Which Engine Should you Buy? *Diesel Mechanic Explains*

I discuss whether a Diesel Engine (6.7 Cummins) or a Gas Engine (6.4 Hemi) is the better choice for you to buy in your pick up truck. I explained as a heavy duty diesel mechanic the issues and benefits with a modern diesel engine as well as the benefits of having a diesel engine for towing and power.

I hope everyone is having a great day. I figured now that the price of Diesel fuel has come down a bit that people would be more open to the discussion of buying a diesel engine vs a gas engine. and at the end of the day it comes down to what you will be using the truck for.

1. towing
- If you are towing heavy or frequently the diesel option is by far your best options. It is a far superior engine for towing and will give you much much better performance under load then the gas engine.

2. Driving habits
- If you are not driving your truck long distances or often the gas engine is probably the better option. these modern diesel engine love getting nice and hot and worked hard, same for the emission systems. without that you will shorten the life of the diesel engine.

3. reliability
- unfortunately the reliability of diesel engine is no longer what it used to be. these diesel are having much more common problems thanks to the emission systems whereas the gas engine don't have emission systems and don't run into these issues making them a much more reliable option

4. Idle time
- If you know your truck will be idling, you should buy a gas engine. these diesel engine do not like to idle and you will shorten the life of the engine

5. payload
- if you want to maximize your trucks payload the gas engine is the best options for that because it simply weighs less then the diesel option.

those would be my 5 things to look at before buying a gas or diesel engine for your truck.

hope you liked the video!

The heart wants the cummins, the brain knows the gasser makes more sense

I used to think getting a 2500 gasser was dumb. Then I got my first work truck 2500 Chevy with the 6.6 gasser. Very impressed. With these new 8 and 10 speed transmissions paired with 410 and 4.30 rear ends these gasser tow great. The ONLY reason to buy a diesel is if you do hotshot for a living and you're towing every day. Towing the boat and camper on the weekends does not require a diesel. Not to mention all our fleet work trucks were diesels and we had all 3 big brands and they all had issues. Unless the epa drops the bullshit emissions requirements I won't buy a new diesel.

Very good review. I was looking at both a 6.4L 2500 and 2500 Cummins. Since I only need it to tow a 5600lb travel trailer a few times a year I chose the 6.4L and saved the 10 grand. Also nice that he mentioned payload advantage with the gas engine. Seen a few comparisons videos were this is never even mentioned.

Bought the 2018 Ram 2500 Cummins. Starting looking at trading for a 2020 Ram 3500 for the Aisin and more payload. Started reading about the CP4 fuel pump issues and decided to keep my 2018 with a few after treatment modifications. Was the best way to go with 68RFE tuning since I don't tow more than 10K lbs. The engine runs cooler (oil and coolant temps) with the after treatment removal - we don't always mention this benefit.

Alex. I bought a 2024 Power Wagon. Love it. I just completed a 7000 lb tow over the Rocky Mountains. I was very impressed how well it worked. I’ve had Duramax and Powerstroke. This 6.4 works good. I got 20 liters per hundred. I have a fleet of trucks with Ram and Ford diesel. The exhaust and emission system will absolutely drive you crazy. Failure after failure. Brand new. Doesn’t matter.

I had a 2018 Ram 3500 Larime with a 6.4 Hemi and 4.10 gears. It was a decent truck, but when I was towing, like you stated in your video, it could do it, but just seemed to struggle. I now have a 2022 Ram 3500 Limited Longhorn Mega Cab with the High Output Cummins. WOW what a difference. Now when I tow my 5th wheel it is so much better. The exhaust brake is wonderful. Not to mention being able to use the truck lanes to fill up. Also, using the Open Roads fuel discount program. Enjoy your videos.

2007 Chevy Silverado 2500HD with the 6.0 vortec engine with 330, 000 hard miles and still going. Use it to pull lawncare and dump trailer ever day and this truck is just going and going!

Right now I have a 2014 Ford diesel I bought new. Emissions intact. I use it just for towing north of 10, 000 lbs. It’s been a good truck but I have spent a ton of money on maintenance over the years and recently spent about $20 grand on repairs for the cp4 failure and a sensor on the dpf caused it to derate and quit regen’ing. Fortunately they were able to save the dpf with a good cleaning. So I’m really starting to think that if I can get away with a good gas engine I’ll do it, even if I have to sacrifice some power and fuel economy. I may even save more money in the long run not paying for all the maintenance costs on the diesel and all the fuel additives and def fluid, etc.

My dad has that exact same 2500 Cummins. Rims and tires and all. When we don’t use it for what it’s for, running hot and hard, it’ll tell us to drive around until the system can clear some exhaust filter. And it’s so random you could be on your way to work and you can’t shut off the truck. So now you have to give her the beans for 30 minutes and now you’re late and then your fired and now you can’t afford the payments. Luckily it’s our businesses work truck now so she tows every day and I like hearing the turbo whistle my name so she gets ridden real hard

I am from Kenya and i realy love American trucks i wish they could make right hand drive for Africa because with the kind of roads we have you guys can't utilize full potential of your trucks like us here .I just wanted to say toyota still makes the most reliable diesel engine the 1HZ 4.2L inline 6 naturally aspirated. The engine has the longest production time frame to date for the landcruiser pick up trucks.

Just traded in my 3.0 Duramax for a good old 5.3 gas engine. Bought my truck new with the 3.0 and put almost 54k on it and loved every minute of it. We towed our 5, 000LBS travel trailer around 10, 000 miles over the last 2-1/2 years. Towed great, fuel mileage was amazing, supper smooth engine. Why did I trade it in? Because over the 4th of July weekend my truck had a check engine light come on and limited me to 5 miles per hour after driving 200 miles. None of the dealerships could even look at it for over a week. What if I was on a long family vacation towing my trailer? We would have been stranded. I can reset codes and fix my 5.3 by myself. Super easy to work on and parts at every auto store. The Duramax requires the dealership to reset emissions codes.

My son and I recently towed our tandem dually 25’ 12 ton on the deck capable cam superline equipment trailer in which weighs 6500 pounds it’s self from upstate New York to Harrisburg Pennsylvania in which consist of ALOT of mountainess towing to pick up our new power paver in which weighs 11, 000 pounds for a total of 17, 500 pounds being towed with our 2020 ram 2500 6.4 hemi 4:10 gear and an 8 speed auto we were just about spot on max rated towing with this gear ratio and was a little skeptical to say the least on how it was gonna do thinking this truck is probably gonna struggle pretty hard and we both ended up being VERY SURPRISED on how well it did on power not struggling to much at all and fuel mileage we averaged in the low 9 range we were very impressed with this package especially considering the terrain that we were towing in so I give it a big 👍 up personally !!!
