More than something new, I learned something that I should definitely apply to my work process: set a limited time frame to play around. I always get lost in the details playing with this and that, loosing track of the actual edit of the project as a whole.

I had to keep pausing this to tell my girlfriend how my mind kept being blown. I know she doesn't care as much as I do but man your videos are so great. I love you and your work and I'm glad you don't hoard your techniques like some secret family recipe when you could (and are!) motivating people to edit!

I think that no matter how proficient you are with AE/Premiere Pro etc., you can't compensate for the thought and creativity on how this is put together - really superb job, Ian! Just the simple concept of running the clips to the music....so you mask the fairy lights to the beat - great job. So, most people will know how to mask etc. and probably (like me) choose the track first and edit to going the extra mile with masking the lights so they 'dance' to the beat....that's what I learnt - making the effort to take everything up a level, and that doesn't include all the extras such as the light leaks/bokeh to add to the whole atmosphere. For me, it's the creative thought process more than technique that takes this video to another level!

1st and foremost thanks for all you've taught me over the past couple of years. That Neat Video plugin looks amazing! I'll have to get that one.

What I learned today is that there is a plugin called Neat Video Pro (Not Sponsored) that can insanely remove grains and noises from the video blown out by high ISO settings. This is a huge help.

very nice breakdown, and a really cool result! just the idea to mask out lights on a string like that, is so simple and brilliant even though it's a little bit tedious. I also really love your approach with starting with music and then adding these text slides. but i am very amazed how you are able to just picture everything so clearly from the beginning. I always feel like the material i have available is these puzzle pieces i keep smashing in to each other and cutting and distorting til fits. So takes more trial and error than a concrete vision like you have. and of course when you account for all the effects and mix ups you potentially could do in AE you might not have thought about yet it's easy to get "stuck in the infinite". I'm not sure 30 minutes will do for me, but actually structuring playtime and serious work is a really good idea! Thanks a lot! :D

I learned a lot from this video. As I am just starting out with video editing it was cool to see how you edit your video from start to finish because sometimes it can be challenging on how or where to start. I am always learning such cool things from you.

Interesting.
I thought you worked with a lot of masking, but I didn’t expect all that masking
