I think there's another thing to mention. Don't start bands exclusively to earn money. Do it for the music, do it for yourself. For the feeling. Don't focus on the money, focus on the fun and the music.

LEAH is a folk melodic metal singer/songwriter. She has 36 000 monthly listeners on spotify and sge never played live once. Instead she's a mother of five with her own studio and 2 companies. For instruments she hires session musicians and for screams she's had Eric Peterson and Mark Jansen. Her music has such a chill vibe

as a polish person (like nergal, ironically) i can say that the european metal scene seems to look a little different than american one. we have a whole lot of young underground bands mostly created by teenagers that don't even think about making it their "grownup career", they just play for fun, because of their love for music and determination to do something themselves. they play at high school festivals, sometimes support more popular bands at their shows, maybe raise the money to professionally record and album and put it out on spotify (which obviously makes them no money). some of them eventually become bigger on the local scene and maybe go even further, some of them don't and it's okay. my point is, i couldn't possibly imagine a worst person to destroy kids' dreams and tell people what to do than this showing-his-feet-on-instagram, mr. mid-age crisis circus clown. is he afraid that someone's gonna finally "dethrone" his grumpy ass and release music that's more interesting than behemoth's new stuff? probably. so yeah, i think there's never too much music. please start more bands cause there's always something to do that has never been done before, and i learn that with literally every new band i discover. take care!

this new age of music is perfect for me to be honest. because I get to work really hard on what I want to make, I get to be home with my friends and family. and as fun as playing shows is, it's not something I wanna be doing for months on end away from everyone I know. also I don't need any members, I can just start making music and when people join or leave it doesn't have to be a big thing.

I love the insight you brought to this article. Another band that I want to add to the conversation is Bilmuri, Johnny Franck's current project. He DOES tour, but not ALL the time, he drops like two, maybe three, albums a year, he's a beast when it comes to merch, he's great at social media, and he livestreams events around release day. All without a label.

Bloodywood's first live gig that wasn't just a sound test was Wacken 2019. They existed solely online for 3 years.

Honestly the modern era works for me musically. I can make music, make it how I want, and still get to stay home with my wife and kids. I have never been in a band because I never found one when I was younger then I had kids and then I was like yeah I don't wanna be on tour or spending weekends away from my kids and wife. So I just record, mix, and master my own stuff for my own enjoyment and I really don't care if I ever make money from my musiç, YouTube, twitch, whatever, I just do what I wanna do

Another thing darko have going for them is that their merch is basically just straight fashion, something too many bands are lacking in (AKA plaster your logo on a shirt with tour dates on the back, maybe a skull for extra spice)

Something that I've noticed this year since shows have gone back full force, it's the changed dynamic in local scenes. For the best. No stats to prove it, but I feel that local shows are getting a bit more attention, and I feel there's more friendliness towards one another. Been in a band since 2017 (minus pandemic) and this year I just felt a change when going or playing shows. If I'm right, I think that's a good thing.

I dreamed of being a rock star as a kid. In whatever timeline that actually happened, I have no doubt it has broken me and I burned out, knowing what I know now about the touring life.

With all due respect to Nergal, if people don't try new things, there will never be a new Behemoth. Sure, it's probably not a great time to start a band but then again, when was it ever?
All those years ago, bands like Behemoth captured people's imaginations and against all odds, they stuck with it and became successful. Others need to try too.

It's not like back in the 90's where a handful of bands become rich and famous from their "lucky break". This is more the "traditional" route of making music/forming a band/touring/record label/sign your soul away/cut your hair(lol), etc... Nowadays I feel like its better as a whole for bands as long as you can navigate social media well, have an online presence and as you said, just put out GOOD MUSIC. There's a shit load more bands, yes. That's a good thing. More bands can "make a living" playing music, so long as they don't follow the old ways. And just like those days, still only a handful of MGK lookin' asses can make it. So don't fret(lol), just make good music and put it out there, cause we all wanna hear it and support it any way we can.

Last weekend in Pittsburgh, Lorna Shore played on Friday and Jinjer played on Saturday. It was so hard picking one to go to.

Yeah the problem with my band is just like what Nik was saying at the end: we, or at least I, REALLY want to tour. I am a performer by nature. It was a package deal when we first started. I wanted to write good music and I wanted to play it live in front of people. And playing one fucking show is a huge commitment since we’re an internet band who live in two different states.

Hey Nik I think you should do a tier list for bands or even metal genres and rank them by “hevyness”. I’ve noticed that most metal fans start with softer “gateway drug” bands and work up to heavier bands so it might be nice to help people find bands on their level of “hevyness”

1:41 confirmed, Nik doesnt tour with Termina because Nik is afraid Andy will be a diva. Call loudwire and make it a article. 😅

The main lesson I’m personally taking away from this is that if you really want to tour, make sure you already have an established following and the financial means to go on tour before you hit the road.

commenting before watching the video: i agree with the title, metal is a genre that is hard to use to come up with something new because of its fans and officially calling yourself a metal band makes you forever stuck into the metal borders. bands like BMTH and metallica got hate for trying out something new. the black album was sick, deal with it

If a band doesn’t tour so people can experience their music live, then their musics not for me
