Correction: Actually footballs are NOT perfectly spherical. FIFA experimented making such balls and it didn’t workout well for the players, so FIFA dropped the idea back in 2010

The Buckyball structure doesn't exactly give it a spherical shape. It just creates less stress for the stitches as they are more of them than on a dodecahedron or an icosahedron.
