This is the third part of our Sim Challenge IFR flight from Yakima to Astoria. We'll be getting taking off and flying the assigned departure, then joining the enroute phase and dealing with ATC handoffs.

I love this series and its "go somewhere" objective. I flew the departure, enroute, and approach a few days ago... X-Plane 12, C172/G1000 in then-actual weather. Soon after HITCH, in rain and IMC, I started to progressively lose indicated airspeed (the autopilot was holding 8000'). Pitot heat on (forgot to try alt air)... expect airframe icing. Once down to 80 KIAS I "warmed up" the air (by editing OAT in X-Plane) by 20 degF, regained KIAS, and continued onward. Many thanks and keep posting this kind of scenario content! Wayne (DA40 KSBA)

Thanks for this series. Flew this the other day in the C310, Mt. St. Helens is always awe inspiring, even in the sim. Have to work on my DME arcs though.

When you’re direct dmbor, wouldn’t you twist the obs knob to 241 (dtk)? Same thing when you’re direct kast, shouldn’t you twist to 268?

These are excellent and am following along in my flight sim. I'm curious why DME arcs vs just directs from GROMO to OGFAW or OGXOB, etc? I realize we are following the SID as documented, but not really clear why the SID uses DME arcs in this situation at all.

Yeah, I am working thru this on my MSFs, steam edition. I do this before I take real flights too. Hey, anybody know how to get procedures updated for msfs steam. I am kind of limited to ils/loc APCH s?
I tend to ease into these challenges, start out just flying the route in vfr, then add departure proc, then arches, then I add soli IMC
There is some humongous snow capped mountain almost in the rout to BTG vor from hitch, surprised it made the fore flight route list, or maybe I mis understood the route, can some post the textual route?
