The 5 Best Tips for Beginner Golfers

There are a lot of tips out there to learn how to golf, so we put together the 5 Best Tips for Beginner Golfers to help you in the right direction.

So you’ve decided to take the plunge and you’re going to learn how to play golf.

Let me be the first to congratulate you on your decision.

Whatever your reason for learning to play, golf is the greatest sport there is. Built on honor, integrity and sportsmanship (embodied by The First Tee); golf is a window into a person’s soul. You can learn a lot about someone just by how they conduct themselves on the golf course. Being outdoors in the fresh air and getting some good cardio exercise also isn’t a bad way to spend 4 hours either. You may also want to keep a psychiatrist on speed dial, too. Golf can be frustrating and drive you to the brink of insanity if you let it, but let’s not get into that right now. The game is magical.

There’s no need to buy a book called “Golf Tips for Beginners” or anything like that, because I’m going to hook you up with some free tips. You’re welcome.

1. THE PROPER GOLF GRIP
Golf is like any sport in the fact it takes practice and repetition to become good. Before you can make a golf swing with a golf club you need to know how to grip it.

The first golf tip for beginners is the most basic and the most important. You can’t swing a club properly with the wrong grip. To start gripping the club, hold it in front of you at eye level with your right hand (assuming you’re right-handed). Now take your left hand and put the pad of your hand on the top of the club and close your fingers around the club. Got that? Great. If you want to do a test to see if you have it right, let your arm fall by your side and push the top of the club down, if the bottom of the club comes up, you’ve done it properly.

Once you have gotten the grip down, let's move into the actual golf swing.

The Golf Takeaway

Your technique on the takeaway can make or break your shot. If you get the club moving away from the ball correctly, you set yourself up for a solid golf swing. However, if you compromise your form on the takeaway into the back swing, you’ll the see consequences in your ball flight. Before you even transition into the downswing, you are in a bad position and have a lot of fixing to do to hit a quality golf shot.

After watching this video a few times and taking notes, I went to the range for just the second time in my life (after a completely miserable and discouraging first-time experience) and implemented these tips. I was absolutely astonished by the results and could not believe the difference after just a few shots. I actually found myself swinging with accuracy and even hit the pin I was aiming for about 80 yards out with my 9 iron! Thank you so much for this video!

As a life long baseball player, I have been loading up and swaying back to my back foot. I had no idea you were suppose to have most of you weight on your front foot and rotate your hips. That's a huge tip for me, thank you!

I consistently either push out to the right or have a wild slice to the right, I've just finished my 2nd session at the range using your 5 tips with a nice slow tempo and hit the straightest shots I've ever managed. Thank you!

My 14 yr old son got a set of golf clubs given to him- we watch the your video several times practiced twice and from the practice drill of standing on lead foot with back foot off to the side I can use my 8 iron and hit the ball straight for about 200 yards- phenomenal

Todd, I have been playing golf for 25 years and I am a 6 handicap. Why? Because I watch this video before I go play to BRING ME BACK TO BASICS every round. It is mastery of the basics that will allow us to play good golf. I go to the range about twice a week and watch this video on my phone before I start while I am stretching. My playing partners think I am obsessed with these basics...as they hand me their money! Thanks. PS. I also use game improvement irons, Because they improved my game!

If you're reading this in 2019 .. best thing to work on is your grip at first. I can't explain how much this helped me understand the swing. Also, do "full swings". So that you can see the club head with your peripheral vision (left eye for right hand golfers). This will help you start to understand what the club feels like when it hinges in your hands. If you continually focus on practicing this.. I PROMISE... you will become better at golf. I sucked for 4 years until I finally told myself enough is enough. I went and pitched/putted on the practice green for 3-4 hours a day, developing a full swing while maintaining correct power for the shot I was taking. Like a great man once said "It's all in the hips".

I'm a 69 year old guy who has golfed maybe 20 times in my life. Your tip on the grip, and the hinge, seems to have worked. I am finally hitting the ball straight (most of the time). More practice and watching more of your tips should improve my game alot.

Really helpful tutorial also like how you don’t pretend you know everything or that there is only one way multiple times it was stated you were open to hear others ideas on technique and that’s a huge part of being a master at something always being open minded🙏🏼

Hello Todd, (hey Nick), I'm 63, just retired and from California and had this crazy idea that I would to return to this game after 20 years of life/work keeping me off the golf course. Went to the range a few weeks ago for the first time and remembered how frustrating golf was and wondered what the hell was I thinking deciding to play golf again...then I found your videos and your book The Bad Lie, and everything changed for the better at the range and not a frustrated, each visit gets a little better and better. Looking forward to playing my first round this week with more confidence and not discouragement.
Thank you, for your videos and your book...you definitely have taken the "stupid" out of the golf swing for us experienced golfers. I watched one of your videos with you in the real world on a course from tee to green, very informative...any chance of seeing more of that?

Can’t wait to go out today and try these tips. Your video on “thumbs down” has already changed my chipping and putting and shaved strokes off my game. I love how you explain things.

One aspect of the VLS that I find really useful and beneficial, much more so than other techniques, is the application of Detection and Correction. By applying your video tips I have found I can D and C my own swing errors with greater accuracy and in a more timely manner.
Thank you very much.

This is great! I first played 23 years ago twice, and have since joined up with some friends and found I love Golf. I have watched a number of other golf tip videos on YouTube but something about your teaching sticks with me most. I will be implementing these tips on my next ‘super beginner’ round of golf. Thanks again

i’ve found that doing the drill off the trail foot is better because it promotes your body to turn more, if you do it on your lead foot you can often promote a swing that becomes all arms

On the range, particularly with my irons, I am relaxed and hit very few bad shots. When on the course, where it counts, I seem to tense up and hit a lot of bad shots. How best to "carry from the range to the course?"
