I made the change and GM ignored it. Sadly GM is a good example of how incredibly enshittified Google has become...Luckily I don't drive enough to be forced into an iPhone.

Driving back from Estes Park to my home in Central Kansas, the Google recommended route took 45 minutes longer, because it was 20 miles shorter.

It was off by default before, I've been using it since they introduced the feature and it's great.

Also, just because it's prioritizing fuel economy by default, doesnt mean that the most economic route is also the longest. To say that it prioritizes longer routes is somewhat misleading and partially incorrect.

I wouldn’t put it past them to take you down route with fast food places and convenience stores. Because they’re paid to do that.

Google maps isn't great at calculating.
I've also never had google maps reroute me when there was a car crash ahead to get around it, however Waze will reroute me.
Google maps GPS Speedo is not consistent either where Waze is.

I’m using Apple Maps, sure I’ve driven into the lake a couple of times And there’s been a couple times where we both didn’t know where we’re going

But I’m a fanboy so it’s fine now 😍
