Are cold air intakes worth it? I answer this question along with others around horsepower and torque increases, fuel economy, throttle response, and engine sound! S&B cold air intake install for 2019+ 5.3L Silverado.

I installed a CAI - worthless. The sound is ok around 3k RPM and below - but over that it sounds horrible (like a cheap or broken muffler) . I'm using an enclosed unit from a reputable brand. Going back to stock.

I do think a CAI does help with all of your points mentioned but it has to be an actual cold air intake. I was convinced that I was going to do your S&B CAI until I really started to look at the units details. First and foremost the port that is supposed to pull in cold air from behind the headlight and through the hood line will suck hot air. GEN 5 SBC generate heat and in the summer that thing will suck hot air. Second the location of the MAF sensor. There is a clean side PCV tube that directly shoots oil and fuel vapor under WOT into the MAF fouling it and will most likely cause issues. Third their filter testing is kinda crap. Yes they use ISO 5011 but I don’t believe their claims of better filtration compared to stock. The only company that I’ve seen that actually has an almost perfect filtration efficiency and still out flows the stock air filter is the Power Core that Donaldson Filtration created and is used in Volant intakes. That filter has a 99.99% filtration efficiency using the ISO standard that all the auto manufacturers have to use thanks to SAE. It put flows the stock air filter with a higher CFM and maintains a higher mass air density which in return helps both throttle response and horsepower. The MAF reads air density so heavier air and cooler air makes power because more of it! It would be kind and cool if you to do a comparison between Volant and S&B’s intakes cause a negative of the Volant is the amount of turns in the tube which increases restrict but it sure it’s better than stock. Sorry about the paragraph!
