Let's go over setting up Hyper V to use Linux VMs and other non-windows images. Since Hyper V is a type 1 windows hypervisor it is the best performing one for Windows Pro users.

After years of using Vagrant/Virtualbox on Windows 7 for local development, when I finally moved to Windows 10 and discovered Hyper-V I was blown away by its speed, ease of setup and reliability. It was a revolution to ne after the slow, quirky and downright buggy performance of my previous setup.

Hyper-V is a joy to use. It's quick, stable and almost configuration-free unless you're a tweaker. It just works. I often have two VMs running Ubuntu going at the same time, and in 16GB of RAM, no issues. Hell, even if you reboot your host machine, Windows saves the VM state and reboots them automatically when the host is booted.

During your live stream for this, I had Virtualbox running 3 vm's on my windows 2019 server. One for plex, one for win10 and one for pihole. I converted everything over from Virtualbox to Hyper-V. It was night and day. Virtualbox VM's were super slow and super choppy. Now it takes no time to boot and working inside the vm is no longer a nightmare. I did not change anything to the hardware. Everything i changed was the software. Thanks for the help. Been in IT for years and never going to use or recommend virtualbox again.

You are by far the best Instructor on the Internet for IT instruction. I wish you and your family a safe and memorable Thanksgiving.

Really great video!
I used like Hyper-V for ages, but I never knew it was possible to change default location for vhds.
Thanks Chris! :D

*Great HyperV video, Thanks!* Vmware does have free setups to try, like Vmware player and vSphere Hypervisor. vSphere does not rely on another operating system, it is OS independent, so you don’t need a Windows license. And it’s foot print is only 144 megabytes.

Everyone wants to compare their software to Vmware. But Vmware is highly underrated. Vmware is 1000 times more powerful than Virtualbox and these other free setups. Yes the larger services cost money. You get Hypervisor that powers vSphere and vCenter Server. You get containers and Kubernetes Clusters. You get fluid and responsive 3D graphics with DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4.5 with up to 8Gb of memory for virtual machines and games. And you can create and configure complex IPv4/IPv6 virtual networks for your VMs. Vmware also has Cloud technology and Cloud Security, Telco Cloud with 5G and NSX, health state carbon black workload, Tanzu mesh service Disaster and site recovery.

This is great info. I use VMWare Workstation a lot to use and maintain VM's that run software that I don't want bogging down my host. I am always looking to learn more about how virtualization works, and I am looking forward to giving Hyper-V a shot. Even if it may not be as good of a solution as running VMWare, I still love seeing how some of the other options work. Thank you for sharing this content.

Thank you. Interesting and useful. This video is the last step I needed to give Hyper-V a go. Nice weekend!

Honestly the reason I use VirtualBox over Hyper-V is for things like USB passthrough to test hardware implementations and stuff for USB devices to make sure drivers and such are good or to test in Linux with my audio gear. It's just a lot easier to do things like that in VBox. I wish they worked side by side better so I could do more performant things in Hyper-V and testing things in VBox

This is interesting. I use VMWare Player and I found it to be more performant than HyperV, especially for media/gaming.
... oh and it is free for personal use.

OMG! Simply hold space button down before pressing start. Also, going under action and selecting restart helps. Holding space button then pressing start did it for me.

gave up on hyper v when I tried to get things like copy paste and decent mouse integration working with ubuntu as a guest. Vbox might be slower but the reduction in frustration just trying to do simple things is so worth it. After finding a microsoft forum where people had been complaining about the lack of a fix in hyper v for 5 years i figured i can handle slightly laggy (which tbh is barely noticeable)

What i understanded is that only Hyper-V Server is being discontinued in favor of Azure HCI. Hyper-V Server is a free standalone version of Windows Server Core With Hyper-V enabled. This makes sense as WSL2 acrually uses Hyper-V as one of their core components.
Maybe someone can clarify and confirm this information.

One big downside from Hyper-V: There is no (easy) USB passthrough. USB Mass-storage is working i think but a Bluetooth Dongle wont.
That is a blocker for me...

One more optimization, do not set up the VHD during VM creation, but do it afterwards and make it a fixed size disk. Dynamically expanding has negative performance impacts.
