Why Windows 11 Is Still Unnecessary: 6 Month Re-Review

At the launch of Windows 11 Mark said you could be fine skipping it for now, but after 6 months of using it he still feels like it's unnecessary. Windows 11 is still playing catch up to Windows 10 in so many ways, even after plenty of updates. To be fair though, there are signs that Microsoft is fixing some of Windows 11’s most obvious flaws. Hopefully with more time (and some promised features) it will be the obvious upgrade.

You can't help but get the strong impression that W11's UI was dictated by someone who doesn't use a computer all that often. And, as is tradition, "new features" that get promised in future updates largely just restore functionality you already had in a previous version. W11 is practically a professionally painted dumpster -- it looks nice from a bit of a distance, but you really don't want to get into it.

I love how ‘drag and drop task bar icons’ is an upcoming feature. What is this, 1998? This OS is so crippled they’re having to reimplement BASIC functionality.

Still I feel that Microsoft is turning a productive desktop OS into a 2nd class android or iOS clone.

By dumbing down the Start Menu and Taskbar, Microsoft has recreated one of its biggest problems: people who aren't going to let go of the old OS core or their old hardware because the new stuff disrespects their productivity.

The big 'trend' in almost all software, these days; move all the most unimportant stuff right in front of the user's face..and all the most important stuff behind six layers of obfuscation. The same issue as most things, the ones making the decisions are also the ones who will never be using the product..

Every new Windows version is just another step away from the perfection that was Windows 7.

I seem to remember when Windows 10 came out it was said this was the last Windows version. There would be no Windows 11. There would just be improvements to Windows 10. What happened?

You missed one of the biggest flaws of Windows 11 for users that have to have a lot open at once for work. Imagine having 11 Word Docs open at the same time, but there is no text on the task bar for file names and all you get are previews of 11 Word documents. Useless. I need file names to display on the Taskbar.

The other insanely annoying thing is you can't just change your default program for something, you have to change it for every single file type it can open.

The last insanely annoying Windows 11 feature is you can't just display all for the Taskbar icons on the far right. You have to manually tell each program to be displayed, then when the program is updated it switches back to hidden.

I can’t stand the fact that MS added extra steps for everything. Even just trying to reopen a document on a pinned-to-taskbar icon for Word lost the quick list of recently opened apps. And I disagree with the mess that is the cluster of apps in the bottom right corner. It’s again an example of adding extra steps to do something simple like opening your list of available WiFi networks. These little inconveniences add up to a sluggish and cumbersome interface that initially looks clean and simple.

Every new version of Windows gives me anxiety. It's always broken, and I have to relearn so many aspects that it's painful to use. Not to mention the CONSTANT reminders to upgrade

Let's get this straight: Windows 11 is an alpha at best released 1-2y too early (there was zero info / marketing) that is out just because Intel needed a new scheduler for gen12 so that they'd have something competitive against AMD. Microsoft took one for a partner.

Windows 11 is a downgrade in functionality, which to me makes it objectively inferior. The new look is nice, the new settings app is nice. But other than that its taskbar is terrible compared to the older ones because of the lack of customization. The search function can't launch apps with parameters anymore. Restrictive hardware requirements and forced microsoft accounts. Ill pass.

I have watched several videos about Windows 10 vs 11, but none of them have cut to the chase like you. I just want to know if its worth upgrading, and you have answered that very succinctly. Thank You. I will stick with 10.

Seems to be a trend with Windows alternating between a good release and then a bad one. I'll presume Windows 12 will be a much better option over W11, much like all the rest were.

I don't know who's managing the Windows development team at Microsoft, but they are NOT doing a good job. That, and somehow MS have failed to learn past lessons with Vista, only this time it's worse. Not only is the OS buggy, but it's just flat out incomplete and lacking in any meaningful features that are actually good for the people Windows is SUPPOSED to cater to - businesses.

With this speed of improvements, they will need to extend the support for windows 10 at least until 2050.

The best thing I love about Windows 11 is that I uninstall it and put Windows 10 back.

Microsoft should have just kept on evolving Windows 10--it was a nice and quite stable release in the recent updates.

Honestly Windows peaked with XP. They nearly matched it again with 7, but it's downhill since there.

I have used Windows since the earliest days (I use to have a MCSE, MCP, CNE certifications and am a former network administrator). I have always installed the latest version of Windows just about when its released or prior to its official release (including the various versions of Windows NT). This is the first time I have no desire to install a new version of Windows. It feels like it has moved backwards and Microsoft is trying to force too much control of my Windows without the ability for me to customize the look and feel and they want to spy on everything I do. Although Windows 10 is my primary operating system, I do use Linux about a quarter of the time mostly because I enjoy my privacy. With Windows 10 we gave up a good chunk of our privacy and with Windows 11, we are giving up all our privacy.
