Microsoft's new Windows 11 operating system is here. It includes a new UI, redesigned Start menu, an overhauled Microsoft Store, and much more. Microsoft likens Windows 11 to a familiar family home that's been renovated, but have the renovations been completed?

microsoft still got that "bear with us, we're getting there" feeling to it - even though it's a f'ckin billion dollar firm

“It’s not there just yet.” Feels like a good summary for the whole release.

I’ll probably end up getting this new thing in like 5 years from now after retiring my old laptop.

2:36 it’s funny how drag and drop seems to be pushed aside as something for “power users” when I remember in the early days of macOS, this was seen as a huge deal in making computers simpler and easier to use by working on the basis of logic on a GUI rather than using a specific import command. How Microsoft regressed on this one in 2021 is beyond me.

Here at Windows, inconsistency is part of our DNA !

This is exactly how an OS review must be. Actual usage video, straight from a screen grab. About time phone reviewers adopt this method as well. Great vid, and I'm only just 2 minutes into watching the video.

Glad Microsoft took the time to change the settings app entirely, but did literally nothing to improve file explorer. You know, the thing you use 70% of the time on Windows.

Missing drag and drop is pure insanity. What were they thinking ffs? And no dark mode in Task Manager is beyond me.

What I really don't like about Microsoft is a lack of consistency. Round corners - square corners - round corners... No aero - aero - no aero... No widgets - widgets - no widgets... and that goes on and on. They didn't bother to refurbish ribbon panel only because they will be back to that paradigm again in the next Windows.

2:01 It's not "completely gone", you have to right click on the start menu icon to bring that menu. You can still access the same things from the Task Bar.
3:40 Those widgets are coming directly from Bing and rendering in an Edge view control. So it's not forcing you to use Edge, Widgets panel "is" actually Edge.

5:05 it's not important how many users currently use Microsoft Teams. The idea is to kill the competition because IT departments are a lot more likely to switch to Microsoft Teams with it being integrated.

I was excited, installed it for the UI anyway, and everything I did felt slower and buggier. That, and all the inconsistencies just feel more amplified than before. Rolling back for the moment, will upgrade when all these issues get resolved.

Why does the weather open in ANY browser? They have a weather app. It's a good weather app. They just need to have the weather widget open the weather app.

How did they STILL not fix it?

As a GNOME user on Linux, when a see this attempt of Microsoft trying to be consistent -- I really see that in Linux despite all the problems we have in others areas we do have very consistent UI/UX.

My rule of thumb has always been wait at least 6 months before upgrading to a new OS like from 10 to 11. Windows 11 is still not finished and has a lot of issues especially for the enterprise side of things like I deal with daily. We tried it on 5 computers and getting them to join the domain was a nightmare. We immediately reimaged them back to Windows 10.

The inconsistency and missing features is a joke

Basically just a skin for Windows 10.
I wish they would integrate all of the old legacy stuff better into the system. The settings app is the best example, too many layers and hidden settings. Without the search feature I would be lost.

After dealing with 10's upgrade cycle, I am not upgrading to 11 for two to three years. Have 10 where I want it to be, and it works. It has finally become a the decent OS, and throwing and starting over, for something unfinished and unpolished again is a nightmare I am not dealing with.

The inconsistencies you mentioned with dark mode and old-looking menus has been a pet peeve of mine with W10. I hope they do something about it this time around.
