In this guide, we go over the best approach to configuring your controls. More specifically, we cover key concepts you need to know when changing controls, how to apply them, and lastly over my control setup and the thought process behind each change.

You can also hold the special button to shield tilt so you don’t get shield poking instead of using 2 shield buttons

This is probably the best controller setup video out there, there is no pressure on whats right or wrong but you give great advice on how to optimize our own playing style. My controllers are similar to yours I just have my attack button as Y instead of the right trigger, but I will try the right trigger out to see if it works for me.

The thing that always strikes me as strange about Smash's controls is that the A button effectively has two jobs: tilt and smash. At the same time, there are two buttons mapped to jump. WHY??? Clearly, what HAL should have done, starting in Melee, is split the functions of tilt and smash: for example, A special B jump X smash Y tilt. Imagine the gameplay possibilities: we could have long and short versions of smash attack in the same way that Palutena has near and far versions of her fireball. The near version might be more powerful at the cost of having less reach. We'd also have another attack, a neutral smash attack (assuming jabs are mapped to neutral tilt). Also, having smash and tilt mapped to different buttons would make the game so much easier for newcomers to understand. I remember the first time I played smash - I was 19 and had never played any fighting games in my life - and when I was told that there was another type of attack which requires you to tilt the stick only a little bit, I spent all my time figuring out how to much I needed to move my thumb rather than thinking about how to actually use them in a fight effectively (and I still fail to do tilt attacks consistently). I ended up mapping the right stick to tilt, but then I have to move my thumb away from all face buttons, which is sub-optimal. It boggles my mind that to this day, the A button does two DIFFERENT THINGS which you never want to mix up, and... nobody seems to care? Like, I can remap all the other functions to whatever button I want, but I can't have tilt and smash on different buttons?

3:15 LOLOLOLOL I never thought of it that way before, but you're kinda right about the default setups 💀
also, really liked you covering different use cases for the confusing 'stick-sensitivity' settings, as well as mentioning RSI & not feeling pressured towards 'another player's setup' 😃

I’m also a link main but opted for a shoulder special for easier and more consistent b reverse and wave bounce movement. never thought of how it could be easier for nair loops with the shoulder attack 🤯 (the other 3 are reserved for jump shield and grab so only one left) definitely something to think about if I get consistant without a shoulder special button…

Personally I play default face buttons, have separate tilt and smash stick options based on character choice, shield on right trigger, grab on righf shoulder, jump on left trigger and a basically useless special on right shoulder

I might try that shield on Y suggestion though as I rarely use y anyway

Tap jump is off (I seriously don’t understand how anyone can play like that)

Rumble is on

AB smash is off

And I can’t quite remember what sensitivity is at

L jump, A special, B attack, tilt stick, Stick Jump off, High sensitivity. I don’t know how it came to be I switched A and B but it happened!

hey Bro I got the same 8bitdo you're using, do you recommend it using it for smash over a gc controller? also do you use it in bluetooth or 2.4ghz/wired mode?

I've never understood why short hopping couldn't just be an input. it's frustrating, pressing 2 jump buttons for short hopping

GC controller + jump on shoulder = easy idjs
