if steam OS becomes a viable option, I don't think Id ever come back to Windows again. Really hope this happens.

I see a future where were all gaming on ARM based devices from nvidia or amd running some form of linux, whether thats steam os or something else. But x86 and windows both are on their way out… the end of an era is almost here, thank god.

Problem with SteamOS is that you’re still limited in a lot of multiplayer games you can play because of the anticheat. Like LoL, Valorant, Tarkov, WoW, Siege etc. There is also issues with peripheral support and HDR is hit or miss.

Everyone who is complaining about windows definitely are not smart when it come to technology. If you know how to optimize windows for gaming then you understand how good it actually is.

Been saying since Windows 8, when it comes to touchscreen on Windows, Microsoft should have embraced the radial and rolodex menus from the XBox years ago... Because the closest thing to a finger/touchscreen menu is a controller, not a keyboard and mouse... I don't think I've really seen anyone use a touchscreen on Windows in anger ever, and I've worked in IT for over 25 years!

The different teams just don't seem to have collaborated closely throughout the years, will be interesting to see what they can do if they bring relevant teams together...

I don't understand one thing. If SteamOS becomes a full-fledged Windows alternative(with a media player, office suite, productivity software), it would gain 30-40% market share in a heartbeat. Hell, if Valve decides to launch a Pro version for $1000-1500 with ~5080 performance it's a game over for consoles/Microsoft/which ever hardware manufactured they are not working with.

AMD is doing great with their cpu price to perform metrics. What we need competition for Nvidia in the mid to high end gpu market. Making a $1000 5080 with only 16gb of vram when we know 4k and RT eats through vram is what I mean. You have to pay double just to have enough vram to not make your card obsolete in a few years

2026 is just way too early for a nextgen leap in consoles.

Maybe they’ll go back to the windows 8 days where there were basically two guis within windows or make the Xbox windows app look and feel much more like the os that runs on Xbox. Idk how I feel about that. Personally I like the way the Xbox app is set up. Got a pc and signed into the Microsoft account I used on Xbox. I downloaded the games I was playing on console and my saves were there in most games. I can play with my friends on console. The thing that really needs to be addressed in the short term is game bar. It has a lot of great functionality but there are all sorts of issues and I find myself having to go into the settings to clear the cached data and rest it more often than I would like to have it work properly. It needs a fix. Personally, I also feel that game pass is worth it right now. I’ve gotten my moneys worth. And if I want to chancel I buy the games I want at a discount and cancel. Pretty simple.

I obviously use steam as well and my experience has been great there as well. I think there’s room for both steam and Microsoft in the market. I don’t care about handhelds but steam is as an easy download for desktop would be nice. I’d definitely try steam os on desktop if it had some sort of traditional Linux type gui that you could actually use as your main os or for work like Ubuntu or any of their other mainstream distros. I don’t think that will happen though as I think steam is trying to keep steam os dummy proof and having a desktop steam os environment with a terminal and easy access to the root directory is not something steam wants.

My main problem with Windows 11 is that they killed off WMR, and now my Reverb G2 won't work if I "upgrade". So, I'm sticking with Win10.

Valve should release a minimum spec (subsidized) comsole themselves and be at least somewhat competitve with PS/Xbox and let third party manifacturers provde the higher spec machines.

I thought for a long time that Microsoft should bring Xbox console interface to their Windows app(and maybe combine it with the Media Center) + Xbox backwards compatibility and expand it.

Me should drop Windows for gamers and build a new over system for gamers, where it is tuned for games

I have given up Windows. Ive had windows and linux in dualboot for 16months now. Where things work on linux. I have had reinstall over and over my windows to solve problems. Games crash and so many issues on windows. What i start to notice is that more and more of the security stuff in windows is causing the crashing, a lot of the problem from december to now was caused around core isolation, and drivers had issues etc. Windows did not want to update etc. So yesterday, I removed windows from 3 of my computers. So im a pure linux user now. Sounds strange right? Well, I have a better time gaming on Linux right now. Im using CachyOs. You cant have a better time on a distro then that OS. So i figured, im done. Things are looking better for the next driver that is comming out in about 3-5 weeks. New wine and all that. I dont see any reason to use it anymore as it is now. Maybe if they manage to fix stuff. But the crashing and the problems in windows all the time. I just want to boot up, game and go to bed after work. Dont sit there looking at 0x00xxx event viewer issues.

I dont care to much about having my windows as a consol. I want to press start and its working. No bluescreen, crash to desktop and debloat and performance problems.

If I want to have a gaming os from windows, I want a clean ISO like it was windows xp, local user, no teams, copilote, cortana, AI, adds, preinstalled bing BS i never use. I want windows in the barebones, like it was linux installed. Then I can choose my self, what I want on my computer. If I want to uninstall Edge.. Let me.. I know how to strip down windows. But the problem is it breaks... I want me as a user to decide what I want and dont want on windows.

Valve already have announced a partnership with Lenovo at Ces for the Legion Go S handheld. It comes with steam OS pre-installed and will get the updates that the steam deck gets.

The software engineer at Valve said in a interview with PC World that home consoles are in their plans but who knows when that will be ready.

indeed, it's evolving so hard that SteamOS will replace it.
