FIRST LOOK: Apple's new smart display with StandBy Mode

After the first day of their WWDC conference, Apple released the first developer beta of iOS 17 with a really great new StandBy mode feature for iPhone that turns it into a smart display? Let's hope this is also a sign of dedicated smart display hardware coming in the future.

Best WWDC in a time… I have wanted standby mode (night mode on Watch) on the iPhone for I finally get it, plus not surprising a whole lot more!!

The iPad mini would be the best candidate for these functions. Would love to have an always on Live cam from the dash.

Seeing this new mode in action really emphasizes how useful and practical this new feature is. As you mentioned, I can't help but think that this is hinting at a forthcoming smart display of some sort. Now if we could only get a whisper mode for Siri.

There is a setting to turn on or off always on display for the stand by mode. It seems to work on older phones to use the always on display, while on this mode. I haven't tried it, but I will once beta 3 or 4 is released.

Great if you have a bare phone with no case. Will it work with a phone that has a case?

the only thing is that I tried to do it last night but it turns off automatically. They need to change it so that when it's in the stand by mode it doesn't turn off. Or at least have a setting

I cannot get it to work on my 14 Pro. It is enabled under Settings. I put the phone landscape and plug it in or attach the magsafe and it won't start StandBy.
