It's a mane.

Humans have manes.

When someone shaves their head, and goes out on a winter day for the first time, yes, you understand that a head of hair does help keep your brain container warmer.

As someone who has been bald for years, I can say that a full head of hair acts as a sort of antenna. You'll feel it if your noggin is getting close to something, making it possible to avoid scraping or bumping into it.
Since I've been bald, I can't even remember how many times I've bumped and scraped my thick skull on so many things, most could have been avoided had I had hair. 😂

“the hair on our heads is long and dense”
All bald guys: Yeah, nah.

"Sweat can easily roll off our skin and carry excess heat with it" - I don't like to quibble, but surely that's not how sweating cools us? It's the evaporation of the moisture from the thin film of liquid covering the surface, that cools. It takes energy to go from liquid to vapour.

I do wish that all narrators of documentaries had a voice like yours. I am tired of being screamed at by narrators.

You made a mistake at 7:12. Women find the smell more attractive if their immune system is *different.* The mix of two different immune systems will give the child better chances to deal with the constantly changing pathogens.

If you have ever watched big cats fight eg... a tiger versus a lion for instance, you will notice how the mane of a lion protects its owners neck from from being grabbed at by its opponents without getting a mouthful of hair.

I always had a hunch that our pit and pube hairs were to lessen chaffing. It's also definitely a sexual maturity thing too

As a woman who has a constant battle with beard hairs (about 15 of them on my chin that stick their ugly heads up on a regular basis and require plucking) and a mustache (its light enough that I don't bother removing it unless a very thick dark hair comes in) that came in at about 16, my heart goes out those female lions - I bet they wish they had opposable thumbs and tweezers, chin hairs itch!

You didn't go over hair texture much. I have European ancestry and live in the high north have thick, straight, long hair and it sure does keep you warm in winter and can be put up in the summer. A friend who has African ancestry and keeps their hair's natural texture complains about how straight hair doesn't build up ice as bad as what she has to put up with when going outside. I've not had the experience so don't know if hair texture really messes with ice build up from your breath that much when hiking in the winter, but it would be interesting to know where the different hair textures come from.

One other thing with long straight hair. When jogging it flicks back and forth and acts like a mosquito swatter. (I live in the land of the mosquito - it is the state bird.)

I've often wondered if human hair also has to do with primate social bonding through grooming. Head-hair might have compensated for losing thick body hair, its extra length giving us more to work with (not to mention protecting shoulders.) So styling hair might have begun really, really early, without the utensils surviving as artifacts (a stone comb would be difficult both to make and use.)

I love it when you make videos about humans, studying these things makes us understand ourselves, I like how your channel is diverse and not just stuck in dinosaurs or prehistoric animals from the same period, like other channels, keep expanding your content as much as you can, it will attract even more people to your channel.

I've grown my hair out over the last 18 months or so. I was surprised in hot weather I felt more comfortable than when I had buzz cuts. Then I realized with short hair its (the sun) shining directly on my scalp in places. So yeah, insulating for sure. As for pubic hair I'm prob in the minority but I find it more attractive when women have than not.

I thought that mates with differing immune profiles attract each other.
This would make sense in that the offspring would inherit a broader spectrum of disease protection.

That's so cool about the Mammoth tusks! Please post updates about your project 🙂 Love your videos, truly interesting. You are a great reader/speaker - calm, friendly, good speed and consistent volume.

neat stuff. I thought the armpit odor notion was based on the idea of attraction between potential mates that had different histoimmunolgical complexes, to ensure genetic diversity in offspring.

It's an evolutionary response. The woman can reach down and grab the hair to keep his head from moving or stopping before she finishes. That's why nice guys are usually bald.
