US Scientists Achieve Nuclear Fusion Energy Breakthrough l The Significance And The Road Ahead

The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) said it had used the world's largest laser to create, for the first time, a fusion reaction that replicated the process that powers the sun and generated more energy than it took to produce -– a goal pursued by scientists for decades. US researchers hail the experiment a "landmark achievement" in the quest for a source of unlimited, clean power and an end to reliance on fossil fuels. In this episode of Decode Zakka Jacob explain the process of the nuclear fusion process and why could be the next big thing.

This discovery, we'll important, is about the first step in about a million steps before this vision of what this video is hoping. If we don't blow ourselves up first, it will be 300 yrs before that vision will be achieved.

If this is true then it would be beneficial to human and nature

It's not in southern CA. It is more considered near Silicon Valley. Just FYI

Thus was a result of the collaboration between Russia, China and the US.

Business is one side

Military is another.

If people haven't noticed

These nations have similar Military weapons too...

I was searching for a commentator who "got it" about the consequences. And you definitely do. Think of cars running on internal combustion engines burning hydrogen gas with the only exhaust being water vapor. Think of the deserts turned into unending farmland with desalinated ocean water created with fusion energy plants. No more solor power, no more wind power, no more electric cars, all made as obsolete as the horse & buggy.

This is a really well balanced perspective. Thank you much!!

This was the most misleading headline ever. You are ignoring thr colossal energy used to power the laser.

The Lawrence Livermore Labs are in Northern California not Southern California FYI.🙁

Fusion energy is NOT clean, NOT unlimited, and NOT cheap.
1. It's not clean, because the energy released by fusion is mostly in the form of high-speed neutrons, a dangerous radiation which makes most materials radioactive. That's in contrast with energy from fission of uranium, which is mostly in the form of heat (high-speed 2 atoms resulting from splitting of 1 uranium atom).
2. It's not unlimited, because fusion reactions need TRITIUM, which is produced in fission reactors. Not any fission reactor can produce tritium, but only CANDU type of reactors, which are few in the world, mostly in Canada, India and South Korea. The entire world production of tritium is only about 3 kg per year.
Tritium can also be produced in the fusion reactor itself, but that would consume most of the neutrons (and thus the energy) released by fusion. Each Deuterium - Tritium reaction consumes 1 atom of Tritium and generates only 1 neutron. That 1 neutron can be used to produce 1 atom of Tritium from Lithium. But that would consume all the neutrons generated by fusion, just to replace the Tritium consumed by fusion.
3. Some calculations about cost. The energy released by 1 pellet of deuterium-tritium was 3.5 MJ. That's equal to 1 kWh of energy, which is worth 0.2 dollars. I'm sure that the cost of producing one of those cryogenically frozen pellets of deuterium-tritium is WAY more than 0.2 dollars. The pellets are coated with gold, and Tritium itself is as expensive as diamonds, it costs about 30 thousand dollars per gram. And I didn't even take into account the cost of energy used by the ignition lasers. Lasers are VERY inefficient, their energy output is only about 1% of the energy input.

The transistor was the last great invention and despite its massive role in prolonging and improving the lives of everyone on the planet it didn't do so equally. So, what good is an extra cup of rice if someone else gets 2, at least that's the macro human mindset.

Did you notice the leadership team in this Nuclear Fusion team?
- The majority of them are female. You'd never see that in China.

Hype. There`s no mention of the costs involved to generate a little energy or the size of unit needed to say electrify a thousand homes. Besides, did they double, triple the amount of energy produced.

this wil be excithing in 30 yrs 🙄🙄🙄and it wil never be free energy, you still wil have to pay, like always, it might be better for the planet tho...
