I just love watching him explain stuff

My understanding, which could be wrong, is an H bomb is a combination of 3 bombs, chemical, fission and fusion. The chemical bomb supplies the energy to compress the uranium or plutonium to make a fission explosion. The fission bomb supplies the energy to force the hydrogen to fuse and then explode.

i can listen to this man talk all day. he could be talking about a snail producing slime and it would be interesting!!!! neil your amazing

The way he explains stuff, making complex subjects really simple to understand, is nothing short of magnificent. This was the science teacher we all needed in school ❤

However... every 'hydrogen' bomb (fusion) uses a fission bomb as a trigger to start the reaction. There are still radioactive byproducts that fall out (fallout) into the environment and last a LONG time.

This is the first time I’ve understood energy in a fusion reaction, wow

In a large thermonuclear device, about half of the yield of the device comes from fission of depleted uranium. The fusion reaction doesn't really contribute to fallout, but because the reaction is triggered by fission and causes further fission, H-bombs generate at least as much fallout as atomic bombs

Also, the terms _atom_ _bomb_, _atomic_ _bomb_ & _A-bomb_ refer to fission bombs like Fat Man and Little Boy. While the term _thermonuclear_ _bomb_ is generally reserved for fusion bombs.
Also, there is the _boosted_ _atomic_ _bomb_ that increases the yield in the fission process beyond that of the normal fission process.

Basically, we need Tony Stark's arc reactor to get Controlled Fusion.

Neil is an *astrophysicist* by education & training, a *philosopher* by nature, and an *educator* of interested masses by heart.

Most fusion bombs are activated by fission bombs internally, they are still radioactive but not as much comparatively to the payload

Never knew who this guy was and for the past month he is in majority of my shorts along with that ex blizzard employee

The reason "Cold" Fusion is so hard to nail down is that's essentially a nerfed form of Fusion weak enough to be controlled. Physics doesn't like it. We're basically fighting Physics as we know to try to cheat a crummier, weaker Fusion into existence to harness for power.

There is still some fallout and radioactivity you use a smaller fission bomb to power the fusion reaction

He is the most interesting scientist today. He loves to teach and gives information in a common way to understand complex concepts

Recent experiments are actually getting closer to controlling fusion, yeilding about 1.5x the energy put into it. Hopefully within the next few decades we can get swapped over to it on the energy grid.

We’ve have controlled fusion (and fission) for at least 70 years the problem (both first discovered and implemented by the Soviets btw) was the energy used to control the fusion was too much so we haven’t gotten anything out of it for that time until last year.

He does a good job making things easy to understand.

His ability to explain complex matters in the simplest manner is unparalleled.
