Tip: convert entire surface to mushroom biome, why you ask? Blue

My number 1 tip is to create infrastructure you need in hardmode before it starts. That means creating tunnels around the natural crimson or corruption so that they do not spread on the surface. Make them 4 blocks tall underground and 7 blocks wide on the sides to slow the spread of vines and thorns. Background walls don’t matter, so don’t break them.

Another useful thing is to complete a soul farm in pre hardmode using dynamite. Trying to build in the underground in hardmode is sanity draining, and you can just place the 300 ice or 200 crimson or hallow or corruption blocks once you’re in hardmode to get souls.

If you’re too lazy to build a soul farm, just craft like 20 slime crowns, and as soon as hardmode starts, kill king slime in the cavern hallow or evil. His blue slime minions drop souls, about 12 souls per crown in expert. Kill him in the lava layer to get Hel-Fire, and in the ice biome to get Amarok.

Here's my personal, all-purpose Terraria Hard Mode prep list top 5:

1) Quarantine your existing corruption/crimson biomes. This is done easily by digging straight down on both sides where the corruption/crimson ends, then straight across, connecting the two. Then, once you've made the passage wide enough (I go with 6 tiles wide at least), take a material that can't be corrupted (I use stone slab, since it's 1:1 with stone, which is plentiful) and line the inner wall (closest to the corrupted biome). I also go a few blocks up and out of the passage. This blocks any growth from stretching over to non-corrupted blocks. The point of this is to limit the existing spread of corruption/crimson, protecting the connecting biomes... since the giant V from killing the Wall of Flesh is already a lot to deal with.

2) Find all of your sky islands. It's useful to have the items from the sky island chests (the lucky horseshoe is great until you get wings in hard mode), but the things you'll want to have in particular are the closest sky lake to your base (for sky fishing) and the closest sky island/lake to the edge of the map (for future Martian Invasions). Knowing where these are will help in the future.

3) Building your Arena. You need it less before hard mode, but it'll be invaluable to you in hard mode. Try to hunt down some heart statues and wire them up if possible, get a fireplace and heart lantern (or several) set up and maybe a small pit with honey for the added regen. I would have suggested a "shelter" spot for Martian Saucer/Moon Lord lasers, but they pass through blocks now in 1.4, so that's out. However, prepping a place for teleporters IS useful! Once you can set one up in hard mode, having teleporters connected to pressure plates on either side of the arena will give you a way to escape a hairy situation. Additionally, building an Old One's Army location is also useful as it's a good way to get useful items (especially a bit into hard mode with the flickerwick light pet and gear from the tavern keeper).

4) Collect quest fish early. You can't store crates prior to hard mode to get easy hard mode ores anymore, but you can still store quest fish. The trick for this is to have a chest or money trough/void bag where you're doing the fishing quest of the day. Have high fishing (sonar potions also help to get fish you need versus ones you don't) helps of course. All you do now is find out what the angler wants, fish that are and then, whenever you catch a quest fish, pop it into your storage of choice and keep fishing. Go until your potion runs out or whatever you like, but when it's over, take all the quest fish you collected back to base and store all but one in a chest for later (turn in the quest now... no reason not to). Now you'll have a stockpile of quest fish ready for when the angler asks. Get the quest, grab the fish, no need to run around... unless it's a fish you don't have... in which case, follow the above steps. You can of course do fishing quests before hard mode, but the useful quest rewards start coming in when you're in hard mode.

5) Prep your housing for new NPCs. There are 25 NPCs who will need accommodations. With the new Pylon fast travel system, having at least 2 NPCs in the Forest, Snow, Desert, Jungle and Ocean biomes (as well as at least one underground) with happiness high enough to sell the pylon for that location will give you a free network of teleporters (no wiring needed). The Caverns pylon can even be placed near the underworld, giving you a skip for a hellevator! Still, setting up housing for your 25 NPCs (or 24 and letting Santa share your room when he comes to town) will save you time (and planning) down the road. You will need to wait until hard mode for the Hallow biome to spawn to make a town there (and when you fill your bestiary out for the universal pylon), but trying to plan out housing and pylon placement now will help you later.

I’m not completely sure, but I don’t think the saving crates for hardmode gives ores anymore. The game checks if the crates were obtained pre-hardmode, and if they are you can’t get hardmode ores from them. However, crates fished IN HARDMODE do give the ores.

Even though some of these don't work anymore there are a couple more things to add to the list.
If you explore the underground desert or fish for desert crates you can get a magic chisel that gives you a mining speed boost.
A new inventory expansion has been added! Is it called the void vault? I forget but it is crafted with bones, jungle spores, and either tissue samples or shadow scales.
Lava fishing is now pre-hard mode! Getting a couple of these powerful items can really help. The demon conch will teleport you to the underworld. No more hellevators! There is a lava shark mount that will make mining hellstone a breeze. And you can get any of the items normally in shadow chests too. A bottomless lava bucket and lava proof sponge definitely have their uses. And if you get lucky you can get a lava hook so you don't need to bother with hell bait.
You definitely want your pylon network set up.
You should have some fishing quest fish stored.
Isolating the existing crimson or corruption is always a good idea.

It's easier to use flare gun rather then yoyo. Then you will be able to stand there using bug net and catch bait, while flare breaks grass.
Also, unfortunately, in 1.4 you won't be able to get hardmode ores from crates.

I was in hell trying to mine hellstone for 5 minutes with the reaver shark being dumbfounded until I found out they stopped it now I need to know which pick that's prehardmode can break hellstone

Very helpful! I actually used the fishing technique in my let’s play. I purely just didn’t want corruption speeding into my base lol. Was lucky enough to get full titanium armor and a titanium trident from just fishing creates, also in my testing, I noticed that I get increased rates to catch crates while fishing in the corruption biome. Great video!

Anyone else use planter boxer for areas?? Or is it just me.and also for the unlimited bait you can go afk with the flare gun and swing your bug net and it still works.

last tip doesn't work in 1.4. The crates that drop in hardmode are different from ones in prehardmode now and wont drop hardmode items upon entering hardmode, so like, you can fish up golden crates, but those are pre hardmode crates, their equivalent in hardmode is the titanium crate. I thought this too tho until i went onto the terraria sub and saw it, sucks but you may wanna update the info so people dont wait to open crates and get seemingly useless items

I believe the infinite bait trick also works by shooting a flare gun into the jungle grass
