The way I see the beginning of this game is like a poorly constructed brick wall, sure you can pass your head against the softer bricks on the outside and eventually bust into late prehardmode, but I like to go straight for the jungle, one of the harder bricks and busy down the wall all at once

SOMEONE WHO FINALLY EXPLAINS THE UNDERGROUND DESERT! All the weapons and gear is so so good, And just covering yourself up is a great way to counter the underground desert or jungle.

Another tip: random puddles that aren’t near ponds or the ocean usually mean cloud islands. Use this to get starfury in prehard mode

I think I've got a basic guide now for early game

Build houses (5 columns, 10x8. Continue upwards)
Go to underground tundra for snowball cannon and ice blade
Go to desert for fossil armor and mandible blade
Break 2 orbs/hearts
Fight EoC
Find staff of regrowth
Farm herbs
Make potions (ironskin, regeneration, swiftness)
If the world is crimson get a spear (like a rot fork). If it's corruption get jester arrows and a demonite bow
Fight EoW/BoC
Get meteorite set
Fight Skeletron
Find alchemy table
Craft endurance potions
Build a house in the jungle (Witch Doctor)
Fight Queen Bee
Fish up honeyfin for WoF
Fight WoF when ready
Go to jungle at dusk or night and buy leaf wings to buy Witch Doctor. Make sure he's the one in the jungle house!

Oh and that one environmental protection book helps out a LOT with farming, you don’t have to hope your pickaxe doesn’t hit some plants and break them before they mature. I think the dryad sells them but I could be wrong.

Just remember that making potions is not as easy as it sounds. For most of them you have to fish for hours to get a good amount. Its just not worth it. Finding them is easier anyway
