10 Gigabit Ethernet on a Raspberry Pi?!

The Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 works great with a 10 GbE NIC. But at what cost?

Well, I tallied it up - here's the gear I bought in the course of making this video:

Here's the guide for cross-compiling the Pi OS Linux kernel so you can use this card:

And here's the page where I have all the details about the ASUS 10G NIC and how I got it working on the Pi Compute Module 4:

00:13 - Testing at 10 Gbps
00:57 - Might as well rewire the house
01:53 - And maybe buy a new Mac
02:24 - Does anything matter?
02:44 - Getting 10G on the Pi

Really appreciate that you didn't extend the video just because you had put in a ton of effort and time in it.

This is great content and information... That I have absolutely no need for. I still watch though.

Keep up the great work!

Jeff: I'm testing 10Gbit on a budget
Also Jeff: Re-wires the whole house with CAT6 and upgrades every network-connected device

Like how you said "Anthony and Linus" you know who's the brains of the show over at LTT

That Raspberry Pi network project really sent you down the rabbit hole! Wow!

It's not always about "How useful it is". It's often more about "Can you do it!?" :D It's like my current project. I live by myself and have no use for a standalone AP really, out of the box consumer grade routers work fine if you just get a nice enough one (the Netgear I got from a friend who didn't need it is great, much better than what I used to have) but now I have an AP on the wall, a 16 port switch with 8 PoE-ports (for the AP, for my Pi-hole when I upgrade that to use PoE, for whatever else I want, like maybe a camera and stuff) a patch panel that I Haven't mounted anywhere yet and a work-in-progress home-built router that's going to run pfsense or similar as soon as I get the 3200G I ordered. Why? Well, apart from the switch which is just to have more ports and PoE, which would be considered useful, the rest is really just because I want to :D And, can I do this? Going to try my hand at VLANs for the first time as well :p Just cause. :D

For such a short video, you went to some great lengths ;) Thanks!

Are you gonna make me bring out our big guns and duke it out against the 10GbE Pi as a NAS? :P

I'm kidding of course.

I love the little in video text about cutting your pcie slot! (Coming from someone who's been too afraid to take the plunge and do it on my io board :))

It's really cool what you can do with a Raspberry Pi!

Jeff I want to thank you for providing a very constructive YouTube channel And with family friendly humor. Because other channels do also provide constructive technology videos however they do not provide family friendly humor and for that reason I want to thank you.

On a budget! Are you kidding me!?!?!? With all the gear you have!! That's insane! Wish I had 1/3 of that equipment...

You only had to rewire your entire network, replace the gear AND compile the kernel just once?

I bet that felt weirdly straight forward then ;-)

That was insane. I'm in awe of you.

“Are you really gonna see people using 10 gig on raspberry pies?”

Me: yes.

That nic has a pretty good NAPI Driver really nice 👍🏻

"I can be totally sure none of my gear or cabling is bottlenecking the pi"

The pi IS the bottleneck
