The USS Merrimack was a Union ship, burned at Richmond, VA Naval Yard and was rebuilt into an Ironclad renamed the CSS Virginia.. It was a surface ship.

Alec Hyde White got things backwards. It was the USS Merrimck which became the CSS Virgina

They were Ironclad Gunships not submarines; however, a lot of the ship was below the waterline because of their massive weight.

okay, I thought I was going to have a bone to pick with you, because I was wondering what this vid had to do with North and South, but I see it had a little mention, but using that image of Patrick Swayze was a little misleading. :}

There was bad history in the commentary in this episode, most of which is corrected in the comments below.

The Merrimack (Virginia) and the Monitor weren't submarines. The Hunley was. Different story. Oh he corrected you. Never mind.

Here's hoping we'll be seeing Hyde-White in the final movie of Turner's Civil War trilogy: The Last Full Measure, that is IF it ever gets made.
